Lame MP3 encoder has been developed for many years now continuously. In fact, there's almost a new build released every week. MP3 compression quality has improved tremendously over the past few years.
Toolame, on the other hand, the allegedly best MP2 compressor, is still at version 0.2i. What's up with that? With so many people using MP2 in VCD/SVCD authoring, why isn't there more interest in perfecting MP2 audio?

perfecting the mp2 audio quality could be great, and i might want to contribute to that.
the problem at the moment, as far as i see it, is to port the code from linux to win32.
as i'm mostly intersted in signal processing rather than computing, i guess i'll wait for someone else to create a win32 source out of toolame.
afaik,
toolame.exe 0.2i compilation was a hard task, and no-one is out there to create new compiles.

It's really weird, because people who use MP3s for DVD rips usually use it with DivX and end up watching the movies on their computers with dinky speakers. MP2, on the other hand, is used with VCDs and SVCDs which people play on their DVD players with massive amps and awesome speakers - and nobody cares about improving the audio quality. Strange.
