I'm totally new to all of this. I've used VirtuaDub before to compress video capture from my computer using fraps. However, I have an iPhone 3g and I can't figure out how to get movies on it. Really irritating me. These are my DVDs and I used DVD Decrypter to put them on my HDD. From there I am lost. First issue is it separates the movie into like 15 files. Second, what program do I use to convert it to iPhone format? Are there any free programs out there? My buddy told me to try [link removed] but downloading it from their site I get a billion virus' and trojans so I uninstalled it. I tried [link removed] but it puts a huge watermark on the screen. If someone could direct me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.
Also, I can't seem to find a good VirtuaDub guide that explains what everything does and what codex's are best, etc. Thank you guys, loving this site so far.

The iPhone 3GS with latest firmware, last I heard, will actually play H.264 High Profile up to 1080p. This should make it rather easy to convert for it, since you can use any one of the free GUIs and don't have to worry about settings (Handbrake, Ripbot264, etc...).

Do you have a link for that? The official site still says baseline with level 3.0. If the thing could do HP@3.1 I'd actually consider buying one or a touch.

Here is the google translation of your link: link (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://bbs.weiphone.com/read.php%3Ftid%3D469047%26fpage%3D2&prev=hp&rurl=translate.google.com)
Apparently it works with AVC and stereo AAC audio in a MP4 container. Problems are that iTunes won't let you transfer the files, you have to use an external tool like FileAid, and the higher the bitrate and resolution the higher the chances of playback issues (stuttering), but 720p seems to work resonably well. All in all pretty good for the hardware. Pity that it can't play 5.1 AAC. Would be interesting to know if aspect ratios other than 1:1 are supported.
I also found confirmation that it works by people on a german board.

Sorry, forgot to mention I only have a 3G. Anyway, I just want to be able to move movies from my pc to phone so I can watch them. I tried handbreak 1st without any luck. It's been a week or 2 so I can't remember if I tried it before dvd ripper. Dang, at work so I can't try it now. Will HB convert it and allow iTunes to move it to the phone?

Did you use the iPhone profile in HandBrake?

Waiting for a nice little HDMI dock and full iTunes support... It'll happen eventually...

But then they would be cannibalizing Apple TV sales. ;)

But then they would be cannibalizing Apple TV sales. ;)That would imply that Apple TVs actually sell.

Exactly. I need some sort of sarcasm smiley.

If I remember correctly, I couldn't use handbreak originally because I was trying to go from DVD to iPhone without using the ripper. Just have to wait till I get home to try it again now that I have the ripper.
How do you combine the stuff so that it looks like 1 movie on the phone? The ripper makes it into like 10-15 files that you convert individually.
Such a pain in the rump. My work PC has most internet blocked so being able to watch a movie on my phone would help pass the time.

I'm sure HandBrake has some help info about how to transcode DVDs. Last time I used it (been a while) I remember it taking care of pretty much everything without any need for the user to understand how to configure it (other than setting the encode profile). If you're only planning on watching the encodes on your iPhone, I'd also recommend setting the quality to 50%. On a screen as small as the iPhone you probably won't be able to tell any significant difference from a higher quality setting and you'll also make a much smaller file.
