View Full Version : Strange burn errors with AGK

In making a backup DVD from several movies, each compressed using AGK/xvid, and using Nero 7 to burn a data disk, the following occurs: any 3 of the movies burn fine. When I attempt to burn 4 moves (a little more than 4Gb total) I get read errors when verifying in Nero and one of the movies won't play past a few seconds. They play fine singly as avis before the burn. I thought the files might be too large as a total, so reduced one of the movies to make less than 4Gb, but get the same result. Any idea what might be happening here?

Hi and welcome to the forum,
For burn errors I would try (in this order) to:
- change the burn app => imgburn
- check the burn speed => go for half speed (or less) of the considered media
- change the media => verbatim or good media
- change the movies used for testing.
Img burn will give the percentage of the media used (+/- R) to be sure not be above max allowed.
Also, becareful about avi's above 2Go, best to split them. My 2 cts.

Hi!
Please post your NERO log that includes the failures you've mentioned...

Well, I slowed down the write speed and tried the ImgBurn to an image file and then burned that to disk and no errors! I'm using Imation RW disk to save on coasters. I use TY -R for regular disks. I'll try it again with just slowing down the drive and see what happens. Still don't understand why burning 4 movies would be different than 3? One thing I didn't mention was that I used VideoReDo to trim and join the VOBs before AGK, if that might make a difference. Didn't have a log file of the error burn.

Hi,
Glad to hear that your problem is solved.
With recent revs, Imgburn has an assistant and, besides img to disc, has the folder to disc feature. You can drag and drop your avi's in it, check the size and burn :)
I use it all the times wether my compilation has 3 (1/3 dvd), 4 (1/4 dvd), 5 (1/ dvd) or 6 avi files or a mix of them to burn. With Verbatim data, no coasters since... (far, far away ;) )

Burning a data DVD burns from the center out. Make sure you aren't getting any fingerprints on the disk as you're handling it, especially before burning.
As a rule, you should never burn at more than half the rated speed of the drive or media, whichever is slower.

Media and disks both 16x, (RW was 4x). Burned at 4x. Clean disk. I've done a number of backups w/o a hitch with up to 5 movies. this one was different somehow. First coaster with TY.

I would like to extend this good explanation.
It depends on how the drive burns the DVD. There are two basic methods: CLV and CAV and several combinations thereof: PCAV and ZCLV being the most used.
Unless the drive uses CLV (which requires a very slow speed, sometimes as low as 1x or 2x) the errors start to gain exponentially from the center towards the outer rim.
In other words, less errors near the hole, lots of them near the edge. Since the recording starts from the center, it follows that the most affected info is that close to the edge, in your case the 4th/last movie.

I burn all my DVDRs at 4x since my Plextor uses CLV also with 4x.
