A couple of basic questions from a newb.

What is the difference between a Codec program and a Converter?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_codec

A converter is the program or collection of applications that makes it happen.

ok, so an encoder compresses or decompresses video or audio so it can fit onto a disk?

And what about the converter - if they are different where does it come into the scheme of things?

A converter converts media from one compressed form to another one. Normally it does this by using a decompressor (the 'dec' of codec) to extract the 'raw' media data and a compressor (the 'co') to compress the data in the new form.

So a converter is a 'higher-level' piece of software that uses codecs to do its work.

There is plenty to read on this forum, as well as on Wikipedia, that will educate you in the matter. Remember the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) you agreed to, mainly 1 and 1a.

If we knew what to do and where to read the stuff then we wouldn't be posting in the Newbies section now would we.

Hi!where to read the stuff

1) As suggested by "CWR03", Wikipedia

2) Use the Doom9 Forum's "search" function to locate pertinent postings here

3) Do a Googlesearch for information from sources other than the Doom 9 Forum and Wikipedia

It is not by any means easy to answer, short of directing you to sources to find the information. If you'd made any attempt to read and understand any of the available info on different encoders you'd know that by now.
