It might be a bad idea to allow silent installs, it should seriously be considered to prevent this. Some applications seem to misuse this:

Observations:
Installing bad/untrusted software on your pc will mess it up
The source for avisynth's installer is available
I'd say that this falls into user error and if your suggestion is implemented it will constitute user terror. You're still allowed to walk outside even if people sometimes die because of it.
Of course I don't make any decisions but I like silent installers as a concept, even if I don't use that feature very often.

Did you ever install Super?

Maybe I would if I could find the download link for it :p
Nah, just kidding, the program is terrible, I wouldn't install it even if could find the download link from the site.

I'm more interested in the opinion of the developer responsible for the installer and not from the type of user never trying and learning new software but rather use poor applications like notepad.

why exactly would it be a good idea to disallow silent installs
I did read your link but I completely fail to see how disabling silent installs will help solve the problem and why you suggested doing so as a "solution" in the first place

The author would probably use the normal setup then. The user is then able to see that it is an outdated AviSynth version and can cancel the setup. It has also the advantage the user has control over the setup options and isn't forced to user the default standard options.

What makes you think that the author of SUPER is incapable of simply re-enabling silent installs?

ok hold on a second let's imagine we're in the h264 subforum for a little bit
some guy: "guys guys people use the raw h264 output option of x264 to encode files they mux to avi with avc2avi, that's terrible"
x264 developer: "oh right sorry for our oversight, let's disable raw h264 output, this is clearly a good and balanced solution to this particular problem"
This is your homework for today, stax76: write an essay of at least 500 words describing how your proposed solution to the problem at hand is different from the problem/solution briefly outlined in the scenario above. Hurfing blurf about semantics will not result in a passing grade.

Probably a workable solution would be for silent mode installs to check the current version and only do an upgrade rather than a blind overwrite.

@IanB
Maybe doing a upgrade in case a older version is installed and abort returning success in case of a newer version is installed or at least showing a message box like 'Are you sure you want to install a old version on top of a new version?'
