View Full Version : BluRay(via computer), quick questions (region etc)

Hi all,
in the last couple of days and weeks, I've been skimming the web (and this site, I was pleasantly surprised that it's still around after all these years) for information about watching blurays on my computer, and while my computer is definitely powerful enough to handle it, there are still a few points that I'm not entirely sure about (conflicting info and such), I hope you guys can help me out here - so here goes:

The most important question is, at least to me, how am I able to play region-locked import discs on my system (I live in Europe) - I know that a lot (if not most) discs are region free these days, but, naturally, titles I would love to get (Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds at Radio City Music Hall for example) are locked, and there are some things which aren't quite clear to me yet:
1. As far as I understand it, BR copy protection is more or less software-based - does this apply to the region locking as well?
2. If so, is there anything I should know about bluray drives (I don't have one yet), for example, this article here
http://www.digital-digest.com/articles/Blu-ray_Region_Free_Guide_page1.html
suggests that I'd need a multi-region drive to watch imported, locked discs - is that true or is there a purely software-based workaround?

tl;dr: what drive/software do I need to watch all blurays (including imported, region-locked discs) on my computer?

Thank you in advance, and if there is any info you need or I didn't clarify my requests, well, just ask :)

and this site, I was pleasantly surprised that it's still around after all these years Largely attributable to Doom9's protective forum rule set, and its diligent enforcement. :)

You can use AnyDVD HD (http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html) with every blu-ray drive.

@Puddingbrummsel

Hi!

As opposed to the commercial product mentioned by "nurbs", you might want to use the following freeware program for removal of region codes:

Thanks for the fast replies - so it doesn't matter what blu-ray drive I'll get (regarding playback, the region locking doesn't seem to matter then)? (I guess I'll just pick one from some hardware review site)

edit: I apologize for the skepticism, but I can't imagine all the region-locking and firmware talk being irrelevant

Just like with DVDs firmware and drive region doesn't realy matter if you have the right software to take care of it. FYI my drive is a LG GGC-H20L and I never had any problems with HDDVD or blu-ray. I guess there are faster models now, but I haven't checked.
