This is an important topic and there seems to be a few posts about this every week. I thought this might save everyone a little time if we put all of our results in one post. This should help everyone save time a money.
First tell us what you are playing your discs on. List all players wether it's your PC dvd Rom (and playing software), Standalone, X-Box, PS-2 what ever and try to list the model number as well. Also list your Burner (include firmware revision) and what software (version number) you use to burn with. Then list by the brand (or web site if it doesn't have a brand) and tell us what worked with what and what didn't.
I have 2 stand alone players, A Malata N996 and a Panasonic all in one mini Hometheater (can't find the modle number but when I do I'll edit the post and include it) and a Hitachi DVD-Rom and Hollywood Plus decoder with Hollywood Plus software.
My burner is Pioneer A03 firmware 1.68 and I use Prassi Primo 2.0
I've tried the following 3 brands
http://www.meritline.com : Works great on the pc and the Malata with occasional pixelation on the Panasonic. Works best on 1x burn otherwise the Malata will sometimes give me an error saying I need to clean the disc. Cost is about $3.79 a dicc
http://www.cd-recordable.com/ : Works great on the pc and the Malata the Panasonic won't read it at all. Again works best when set to 1x burn. Cost is under $3 a disc, but they do have double sided discs for under $6
Apple/Pioneer: Works great on both players. Works at 2x. Cost is $25 for 5 but they do charge tax but still it's $5 and change a piece.

Apple/Pioneer - Works on all of my computer/standalone players. Apex 600A needed a firmware upgrade on the DVD-ROM drive to play. May not be compatible with really old (2/3 year old) DVD drives.
Burning at 2x, usually perfect, sometimes occasional pixelation.
Pioneer DVD/RW - Fairly good computer compatibility with new machines, only plays on my Pioneer RP56 standalone. Apex 600A & older Toshiba won't read it.
Generic Silver DVD-R (not sure sure of the brand) - Only supports 1x burning. Pretty much the same as the Apple/Pioneer as far as compatibility, however 1x burning rate was a definate disadvantage for high-speed copies. Never seen any pixelation on these, possibly because of slower burn speed.
That's it so far - going to get some cdrecordable.com ones to try out too.
Wonder what the best quality is (regardless of price)? Need top-quality blanks to run DVD projects off for clients.

I've used only generic DVD-R types from Meritline.com and cd-recordable.com.
I burn on a Pioneer A03 with firmware version 1.68
Playback on an Apex AD-660 with unit firmware v660-3 and drive firmware (DSL-710A) v2.00
Have had no problems at all with any DVD-R -- all playback well on standalone. I've tried two different types of DVD-RW, however, and they are hit or miss. It works about 70% of the time -- the same disc can be erased and used again with the same burner and content and it may-or-may-not work the next time... The Apex drive seems to be right on the edge of compatibility with DVD-RW...

Bought a spindle (100) of unbranded disks from SVPcommunications.co.uk.
They will only playback on the (Pioneer A03) burner itself. Will not playback on any standalone player or PC DVD-ROM drive. Absolute rubbish.. Datasafe media (bought from the same place) work on everything offered to so far. Does anyone know if the generic disks sold on a spindle are different from the ones sold individually in cases (by SVP) as one person here seems to have had good reults with them....

Generic DVD's from cdrecordable.com work well in my Apex 600 with the latest firmware update. They don't work very well with the firmware that it was shipped with.

I've burned a few dual-sided disks that I bought from CD-Recordable.com. So far the disk I burned using Nero on my A03 with firmware 1.55 will ONLY play in my A03 and my Pioneer DV-C503.
I upgraded my A03 to 1.68 and tried another dual-sided using Prassi Primo. This disk will play in the A03, the Pioneer DV-C503, a Proscan DIVX player and my new Sony CX860. It wouldn't play in a Kenwood DV-5900M.

I use the $3 disc's from www.cdrecordable.com and have had great success with my stand-alone players. I burn using Nero from a Pioneer DVR-A03 and every DVD-R I've made(10 so far) play on both my Apex machines(AD-1000 & AD-703). I've even ripped the Criterion collection version of Robocop with all the extra's and burned it to a double-sided 9 gig disc and besides having to turn the disc over halfway through the movie, it works just like the original(thanks to Doom9's excellent tutorials). I've even been able to play the VHS home movie transfers authored to VCD standards and burned to DVD-RW(6 hours on one 4.7 disc)on the AD-1000(though not the AD-703, but then it doesn't like ANY DVD-RW). (S)VCD to DVD-R tutorials are on www.vcdhelp.com.

Have benn using the $3.00 DVD-r's from CD-recordable.com. Was having problems with it playing on my standalone panasonic dvd and ps2 players but fixed that probelm by making sure my folders were in CAPS as far as VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS believe it or not it actually made a difference and made it work. If anyone knows where I can pick up some dvd-r silvers please pm or e-mail me thanks.
P.S. - recording on 2x with primo dvd seems to glitch a little gonna try on 1 x.

I've been buying these disks (in the DVD cases) from SVP and so far have had no problems whatsoever on a multitude of players. Several Sonys, Pioneers, Hitachis and Samsungs have all played them with no problems. There's about a 10% chance you'll get a coaster, but at these prices for the media, I'll take those odds.
