I am having a weird problem that I am unable to diagnose.
I am using MPChc
build: 1.2.1008.0
MPCc: VS 2008
FFMPEGc: GCC 4.3.3
and I am having an odd problem with one DVD I just bought.
NO audio in movie or extras, just the previews.
win2k's built in dvdplay MFC Application also plays with no audio except for, again, the previews.
the movie is An American Carol released in 2008.
yet I have others movies also released 2008 which work perfectly fine in MPC on the LG DVD-RW drive I have in my system.
The standard audio cable is connected from the drive the the sound card input port.
DVD Shrik does, however have the ability to play the dvd in its preview area and then DOES have sound!!
this is where I am stumped.
any ideas where the problem lies?
Thanks for the help.:thanks:

Might the movie be a rare (and noncompliant) DTS only disc?

@Ceyarrecks
Hi!
My R1 version of that unfunny spoof of a Michael Moore "documentary" plays perfectly, including audio, with a choice of 5.1 .AC3, 2.0.AC3, and Director's Commentary (2.0 .AC3) under Windows Media Player 9 or 11, Power DVD, and even the ANCIENT "MS DVD Player" (Buried in the .CABs of Win98, if I remember correctly). Try selecting each of these audio options from the "Setup" menu.
Does your DVD play properly on a standalone DVD player?

thanks for the input
and while there is no audio on the root menu, the movie does play on a portable dvd player with some choppiness on the video and audio at the beginning.
playing on my PCs is our preferred method of entertainment
what is meant by DTS format and how can I determine format of said dvd?
it has one odd detail I did notice, it stated Dual Layer. Not sure I have seen that on DVDs in past.
Thank you again for the input.

1) DTS is an audio format. I've already told you what the audio formats are for the Region 1 version and DTS is NOT one of them.
2) What Region (or part of the world are you in? What is the Region number of the DVD (look on both the original packaging and the disc).
3) You say, "I am having an odd problem with one DVD I just bought." Is this a new or used commercial DVD that you've purchased?
4) Did you, as I suggested, "Try selecting each of these audio options from the 'Setup' menu"? - This is different than the "Main Menu"

2. Region 1 is where I live, and the DVD is also region 1 (NTSC 1)
3. is a used DVD from Blockbuster 4 for 20 rack. certainly taking the DVD back for "possible" exchange might fix this problem, but will not display the initial cause. (have not taken time to return yet)
4. the setup menu has already been accessed, selecting stereo 5.1 or 2.0 had no effect on ability to hear the audio. there are, surprisingly, no scratches, no finger prints, a perfect mirror on the DVD read side.
again, only the previews had audio. not the movie, not the extras.
also, DVD Shrink played the movie audio in its preview screen.
I was unable to find the old copy of win98 for the older player recommended.

a perfect mirror on the DVD read side.In light of the fact that it's a used DVD, it may have been previously scratched and the polished - to excess.
I'd suggest you try to exchange it...
