Maybe it's not a burning problem
Are you sure the player can play your disks (type, format, content etc.)?

Convert with DVD Flick and burn with ImgBurn. Both are free and compliant with the DVD-Video standard.

The error message "play back feature not enabled" is strange. Are you sure your player is able to play a DVD+/-R?

Are you just burning the AVI files to a disk? Several of the programs you mentioned have no ability to "convert" AVI files to DVD-compliant formats. If you have a standard DVD player that doesn't specify it can play (for example) DivX videos, follow the advice given by r0lZ.

Adobe encore will allow you to compile a full dvd with menus and etc. you can add avi files, amongst other formats, and it will auto convert everything to vob for you. personally I recommend just getting a player that will read xvid and burn them as a data dvd though
