have DV source, did some processing using avisynth, saved to Huff.
Now want to encode to mkv, but
unsupported input format (hfyu)
appears.
I can use vdub-ffdshow-avi, but want to try the line->mkv.
Has the line any advanteges over vdub-ffdshow?

If you are talking about x264.exe it needs either raw yuv 4:2:0 or an avisynth script as input. AVIs are apparently also supported as input, but I don't know what limitations are placed on them.

AVI's are only supported if they contain uncompressed YUV 4:2:0 data. HuffYUV isn't supported.

Use a simple Avisynth script for input, such as:
FFVideoSource("C:\SourceHuffYuvFile.avi")

Software: Avisynth 2.5 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/avisynth2/files/AviSynth%202.5/AviSynth%202.5.8/Avisynth_258.exe/download) + FFmpegSource (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=127037)

One more question>Has the line any advanteges over vdub-ffdshow?

You can read up on the correct syntax if you type
x264 --longhelp

Command line can be scripted easily for batch processing and automatic encodes. Plus, AVI is not a good container for H.264.

The "@ 50 fps" part is wrong, but you don't need to specify resolution and framerate if you do as LoRd_MuldeR said and use AviSynth+FFmpegSource.
