I plan on eventually getting into DVD conversion. But I don't have a DVD Player in my computer right now so that will have to wait. But I would like to convert some files that I captured with my TV-Wonder Card into a smaller file size. I downloaded Xmpeg and the Divx codec, are these what I want to use? As I was going through the Divx conversion guide. I noticed that it output to an OpenDML AVI plugin. I don't have this where can I find it? Also why is everything saved with an AVI extension?

If the software of you capture card leaves an AVI file, you can use TMPGenc to encode this files to MPG-1 or MPG-2. Read the TMPGenc guides in Doom9 for further information.

Well it is recorded in MPEG-2. I'm getting about 10 megs per minute with decent quality @320x200. Is that the best I can do? I was hoping to get it down to around 5-7megs for each minute, I thought MPEG-4 might be able to do this. Quality doesn't have to be perfect, just look for something that's watchable.

If you plan play the films in a stand alone player, Mpeg-4 is useless. To reproduce your files in your PC DivX is the best choice because you will get less than 7Mb per minute.

Ok so Divx and MPEG-4 are different. I thought that Divx was a form of MPEG-4. I have tried conpressing to Divx 4.12 using Xmpeg but I must be doing something wrong. I start with a 1 minute 10 meg file. After it "compresses" I end up with 1 minute file that is 160 Megs. That just seems wrong to me. I was following the guide on this site. The only part that I changed was the output plugin cause I didn't have the right one and can't find it. I'm referring to OpenDML Avi.
