Over the last few days I have been experiencing the "Server to busy" message in my morning (22:00GMT), but when I finally get on there are only ~500 users, i.e. the usual number for my morning read.
Today results:-
Currently Active Users: 481 (56 members and 425 guests)
All times are GMT +11. The time now is 09:50.
Has anything changed? Is Doom9 being targeted?
I know Swede and Doom9 do a fantastic job tuning this server and I have seen it handle over 3000 users without a hiccup.

Noticed that too in the last couple of days. Several times the server wasn't reachable at all. Then the server was back, but showing the "The server too busy at the moment" message...

I've been noticing that too, as well as longer response times from the server :(

Yeah.. Well, from my point it looks like a rouge betaversion of search.msn just (hmm how do I put this in a nice voice...?) CLOGGED THE SERVER WITHOUT ANY RESPECT FOR robots.txt at all. The amount of requests were just too much so I've shut out some C-net addresses of M$, let's hope this will resolve the "Too busy". I will keep an eye open though (more often than the last weeks since my wife's recovery from a stroke is better than anyone could hope for).

Swede,
I hope all goes very well with your wife's recovery.
Thanks for your efforts, but at 22:00GMT it choked again today for about 32 minutes this time. Looks like the selfish buggers have got more IP addresses than you bargained for
Maybe something like mod_cband (http://codee.pl/cband.html) in your apache server could be a more automatic solution.

A few minutes ago Doom9 forum wasn't reachable at all, then the server was busy, now it's back. At the same moment German Doom9 started displaying "database error"
I assume they aren't hosted on the same server. So did this happen just by chance or is there something I should worry about ???

I've been seeing the same thing for a few days now :(

There was a power-hiccup today resulting in a stall/reboot of all my servers. Jeez, sometime I do wonder if this is a third world country. But that doesn't explain the 'a few days now'?...

I've only been seeing the busy server message, but yeah, it wasn't just today.

I've seen it a few times too over the last week or so. But considering the number of users you guys have I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. must have a pretty tweaked apache/php/mysql setup.
I use nginx/php-fcgi/apc or xcache. Loads extremely fast and uses less ram ;)
I've been using nginx for years. It's amazing 21k uniques in 4 hours from digg and never broke a sweat. Avg ram usage for the nginx worker_processes was 31-38mb total.

I've been noticing that too, as well as longer response times from the serverI get a lot of "DNS errors" from my satellite ISP when trying to access doom9 (actually the forum, which seems to respond differently from the main page). Not sure I'm right but I interpret these as doom9 just being slow to respond, because I can usually access it if I keep trying to reload/refresh.
Do we know what the bottlenecks are?

There was another power loss here yesterday which resulted in some downtime due to the checking of the tables. Aside from that there has been some 'heavyload periods' but I'll make some hardwareupdates soon.

I should add that i too often get an error from my browser (only on doom9, no other site is effected)
There is a performance issue somewhere, but when the site does work its very fast for me.
Which makes me thing its a problem with the software.
Does the server get very stressed? ( i get the error continuously throughout the day)

I've just added another GB of RAM and if things dont improve I'm considering replacing the HD with an SSD-drive. Let me know if there's any changes in response/uptime.

I've noticed the forum being much slower than average, and I've checked my connection and my comp itself and nothing's wrong with either. I also usually just get a "Loading" on the tab button and pages never show up no matter how long I leave them open.

Besides *another* powerloss yesterday, jeez is this a third world country?, the added RAM and a few other tweaks seems to've done the trick. At least I can see major improvements in responsetime and as the number of simultaneous users have increased significantly it looks like things are OK for now.

If your server machine is located in a data center, shouldn't they have an UPS at least ???
Anyway, great job. Didn't encounter any problems or delays when accessing Doom9 in the last couple of days. Feels pretty responsive :)

Has the forum software and server software been tweaked for maximum performance?
