View Full Version : 2 hardware MPEG-2 decoders tested , read for results
hiya team , i have been experimenting a bit with 2 hardware MPEG-2 decoders ie the Playstation 2 with component cable and the Hollywood + for PC with Composite cable attached.
after trying both out the Hollywood + beats PS2 which it shouldnt as the PS2 is running a better cable.
if the Hollywood + was running a S-Video cable it would floor the PS2.
hope someone finds this finding and Thread interesting

Only if you explain the testing procedure ...
hiya Ghitulescu , basically its a visual test .........sharpness , artifacts such graininess.
the PS2 was quite blurred and grainy compared to the H +

I ran a Hollywood Plus card (from 1998) followed by a Sigma Xcard (from 2002) for a number of years.
The Xcard provided excellent output connectivity: composite, s-video, RGB(s) and progressive component video. And yes, I was very happy with the picture quality.
That said, a reasonably priced "branded" stand-alone player offers better picture quality these days.

Only if you explain the testing procedure ...
1. video source (format, fps)
2. connections
3. TV type (most LCDs cannot display native 24p) - also a regular [tube]TV under 20" cannot assess the quality differences (I assume they are not so different). Also HDTVs are not born equally in displaying the SD resolutions. And not all inputs have the same quality
4. image type: movements (sport) or static (flowers)
1. Terminator 2 [PAL] FPS unknown
2. PS2 connection Official Component Cable / Hollywood + Cheap basic Composite Cable
3. Plasma TV / Terminator 2 played in interlaced mode
4. Image Type Fast at some moments to Slow at others , a bit of both you could say

s8n,
If you would like to do some testing with a Sigma Xcard, I have one you could have...
Just let me know ;)
thats a really sweet offer SeeMoreDigital , but in a few or more months i plan to get a Denon DVD Player and switch to using that. I recommend selling the Xcard on eBay or similar at least you could make a quid or 2.
