hi,

i'm trying to rip a videoclip from Madonna: Ray Of Light.
like the girl herself the clip is really a bitch (to encode :)).
The movie is full of special effects and really fast moving all the time.
already gone up to 2000bps with gknot (4.12 codec), and i still get crappy result (its not that bad but id like it in dvd quality ;))...
now should increasing bitrate help or should i use different parameters than the defaults (forcing more KF or something i dunno)?
What is the best codec for such bitrates? (3.11 or 4.12)?
Should i get better results with SBC?

hmmz, i was thinking....as size doesnt really matter here,
could i do this in just one pass? or do u always get better quality/mb with two passes?

I don't think that increasing bitrate will help . With Divx 4.12 try change mQ (maximum quantizer) to something lower . Default is 12 . Maybe with 6 or lower . This is how much will be compressed high motion scenes .

my suggestion is to use the 1 pass quality mode at 100% if the size doesn't matter. But, depending on the content the output will always be significantly worse than the DVD.. there are some stuff that no currently known mpeg4 codec compresses well

ok thanks...the quality mode-setting was the setting i was looking for. :)
just curiosity: is setting quality to 100% the same as editing the log file and using 2 for all quantizers?

pretty much.. 100% should only use quant=2 for all frames
