I think because winDvD audio filter was designed to downmix at playback, is not as efficient as Azid which takes it's time. Also Azid is more flexible (you can choose the level of range compression, autogain e.t.c) but on the other hand the downmix that winDvD does is Dolby certified. Thus i'm not very sure which one performs a better downmix.
which one do you think is better?

If i remember correctlt than Midas AC3 decoding was so good that Dolby told him to join them as a coder .... ;) ..... no seriously, use BeSweet ( azid ). Midas Azid is a brilliant sounding AC3 decoder, and as you had stated already, it will give you much more flexibility, f.e you can decide whether you use
- plain stereo or with Dolby surround ( Pro Logic ) 2 channel decoding
- output as 16, 24 or 32 bit output.
Ooops ... have to go now .... my plains is boarding ....
