That's kind of funny since said group puts out some really shitty rips (along with some good ones) :p . What exactly are you trying to rip, and what settings are you using? Provided sane encoding choices (resolution etc.) GK should give you results like you see from the release groups. As a matter of fact, it becomes quite obvious that some of the groups use GK quite a bit nowadays. Adding filters depending on the source can make a big difference as well. But basically you need to provide more information (you didn't even specify if you were using DivX 3.11 or DivX4).

I used:
- Win2k
- DivX4
- 2-Pass Encoding
- Neutral BiCubic
- No Noise Filter
- No Field Operations
- Compressibility Check doesn't run... GKnot crashes...

from the looks of it I would say most groups use a smoother filter at a low setting.. most people won't notice the loss in crispness but they'll notice the lack of blocks.
and... perfect rips: buy the DVD. Almost perfect: re-encode in cce using robshots (www.robshot.com) and re-author..

Hehe, damn I thought I was in the GK forum. No need to ask which codec here :p . Like Doom9 said, smoothing can be your friend. Smartsmoother or Tempsmoother can do wonders for your output, especially if you are trying to pull off a large resolution. On most decent sources you won't want to crank up the smoothing very high, nor will you want to use Vdubs internal smoother. The other two do a better job of mantaining detail.
However, the fact that the comp check won't run is odd. As I'm not sitting at your PC I can't really diagnose the problem, but this could point to some odd problems which are hampering the quality of the conversion.

You dont need Gknot to make good rips using Nandub. Its nice for those that use it though.
