Hi, I'm new to ubuntu and have been doing some googling to find some things out.
An issue for me is that there's a plethora of out-of-date info out there (eg instructions for older o/s) that gets returned and you can't easily tell what's what. No easy way to search for info relevant only to the latest version of the o/s, as far as I can tell.
Anyway, for academic interest re decrypting owned DVDs has anyone gotten DVDfab HD Decrypter to run properly under the latest wine and latest ubuntu ? If so, how did you do it ?
Suggestions on alternative approaches also appreciated.

DVDfab runs under Wine just fine using the default options. You'll only need it for discs that have more than the css encryption. As long as you have libdecss or whatever it's called installed on your system, then you can rip with mplayer or any other native program.

Thanks, just freshly installed the latest of everything, stock standard, and no it doesn't work for me.
I turn off the internet connection (to stop it from connecting to check for another version), start it, it parses my home test DVD, I select an output folder, and then it crashes immediately with that "send error" type window. From then on it crashes as soon as I start it. Should I mention it on the ubuntu forums or do you have suggestions ?

I know this may be a little off-topic with your original question, but if you are new to Ubuntu, you really need to read the information at the link below. It will make your life easier. Ubuntu comes with very little multimedia support out-of-the-box. This guide will help you set up to read DVDs, among other things.

Ubuntu user here.
And heres what i have discovered in my 5 yrs of using ubuntu, the hardware matters in linux, for dvd decrypting its not just what version of libdvdcss2 you are using, but what type of dvd-rom/burner.
For the last three years dvd playback has been a bit iffy for me in linux, dvds that worked very well with previous versions of ubuntu refused to work with the latter versions, even burnt data dvds were spotty sometimes.
Then all of sudden the dvds in question started to work again.
The thing that changed was that i purchased a new dvd burner , an upgrade from IDE to SATA, the previous burner (the one that gave so much trouble) was itself an upgrade from an even older burner.
To be sure i stll have problems with the newer discs (Shrek 2 in particular) but for the most part it was the dvd drive that was the problem , it could be the same thing with you, not saying to run out and buy a new burner but if in windows you are able to decrypt the same discs that are giving you trouble in linux then it could be hardware related.
As for dvdfabhd wine database and crossover office confirms it works, silver in Crossover, Gold in Wine

Hello,
The 5.x versions (currently 5.0.2.5) have an Updater bug that crashes DvdFab when new version is available at the DvdFab site.
You must download the new version, remove the previous one (I use independent bottles for each program, so remove the entire bottle), create a new w2000 bottle and install the new version.

Ripping entire dvd.
I have the dvdfab.exe application setting set to windows version NT 4.0. im not sure if that is required or not.
Also you have to change the registry after first run of of program. "Next, go into your wine directory. The default path is ~/.wine. There is a file there called user.reg, which is part of the windows registry. Open this file in a text editor such as nano. Search for the string Software\\DVDFab\\V5\\Generic. Under that banner you will find two options, PreviewAutoPlay and PreviewAutoShow. They are set to 00000001 by default. Change them to 00000000." The hardware matters in all operating systems -- your case sounds like a bad drive to me. Did it really work better in Windows? Unless there was some compatibility problem in the Linux IDE driver, I'd expect it to work as poorly in any operating system.

Actually the drive in question was an NEC 3540 drive, its possible it could have been the IDE driver
