Don't know exactly where to put this.

I'm was wondering if I can transfer videos off my DVR to my PC. To be exact I have a Time Warner Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HDC box and a Dish network Vip-722K box. Is this at all possible? If so, what tools do I need?

Thanks.

If you're lucky, you might be able to transfer videos using the Firewire output on the SA box. Otherwise, you'll need a Hauppauge HD-PVR.

I can't do anything with the USB ports? I don't think I have a firewire card.

If it's easy enough, you could pull the hard drive out of the device and connect it to your PC. Use 'dishrip' to copy files and DVDPatcher or something to fix them. You will void your warranty.

Nothing through the USB on the SA. YMMV with Firewire support. I can only channel change through Firewire - no recording.

Here are a couple links to the Firewire and HD-PVR discussions:

HowTO record via 1394/Firewire to WindowsXP now with MCE support (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=403695)

Hauppauge HDPVR-1212 Owner's Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1055232)

If you need more space on the SA, there's the possibility of adding an eSATA external hard drive. There's more info on the AVS forum.
