I want to hard sub it but I want the subtitle to appear in the top left corner of the video. How do I do that?

To do so you're going to need to use a subtitle format that has positional information like SSA/ASS. SRT is very basic and only contains index number, a time code, the subtitle text, and a blank line to delineate each subtitle.

I'm afraid I'm not at all familiar with those formats. Do you think you can help me out?

You will actually have to do the work yourself on this one. For best reference, take a look at Aegisub. It should be able to do what you desire. However, you will actually have to carry your own weight and do the research. It's all there, you just have to read it.
