I hope someone can suggest a reason why I am seeing a slightly jerky playback after ripping NTSC DVD's to XVID?

I am using Gordian Knot with rip pack .35 and XVID V 1.1.3. Ahead of that I'm using DVD Decrypter to generate the VOB's. For years I have ripped PAL (25fps) DVD's to XVID and have been very happy with the quality. I live in UK by the way.

Just last week I tried to do the same job with a few NTSC (29.97 fps) DVD's and whilst the picture quality is excellent there is a very slight jerkyness on playback of the XVID files. I have tried playing with Media Player Classic which I guess is using the XVID 1.1.3 codec and with VLC which I believe uses its own codec. Both players give slightly jerky playback with VLC being worse than MPC.

The computer is certainly up to it with a 3Ghz processor, plenty of memory and a defraged HD.

Any pointers as what to look for greatly appreciated.

Bump.

Can I be the only one with this?

What is the frame reate of your final encode? That will tell me if you applied IVTC. If not, then you may be just seeing normal telecine judder, which you are unaccustomed too since you've not worked with NTSC before.

Also, a link to small samples of the source and encoded result would be helpful.

Hi Neuron2,

The frame rate of my final encoded Xvid file is 29.97fps which is the same as the original NTSC DVD.

I have two homes, one in Spain and one in UK. The original NTSC DVD's are in Spain at the moment so I can't upload a sample from one at the moment. I'm heading off to Spain in about a week for six weeks. I'll bring the DVD's back with me and if I have been unable to resolve the issue by then I'll try to upload as you suggest. I do have some web space that I could use.

Many thanks for helping.

Is it film content? If so, you are probably just seeing telecine judder. You should apply IVTC and encode at 23.976.

Thanks Neuron2, I'll give that a try when I bring my DVD's back.
