The files (.VOB) in the DVD are ENCRYPTED (using a 40 bit key). So you have to use a decrypting program to decrypt and copy the files to your hard drive before recompressing them with Xmepg.
I've seen some DVDs that are not encrypted (key = 0000000000), but most of them are.

First use a tool like Smartripper to copy and Decrypt the vobs to Hard Disk. Then you can use the XMpeg.

I must recommend cladDVD 2.0.
Its perfect, its sweet and simple; decrypt selective files, whole DVD, or just movie.
It works every time.
Yes, smartripper is also very very good.
either way, just get them off the DVD by decryption.
