So... I have recently updated to Windows 2000. When I try to play a DVD I get the message that I need a decoder... So I reinstalled a trial version of PowerDVD and everything works fine,'sept I only have 5 min. of audio on the trial version. In the process of looking for another decoder I stumbled across this site. From what I can tell this is a whole 'nother world. One I am interested in.
My questions are these.

I can learn to "rip" a DVD on to my hard drive here?... SORTA
If I do that will I need any special software to play a movie?
Where can I find a FREE decoder that works with Windows 2000?

NO. Just ordinary Windows Media Player 6.4 is more than enough. IF you want ot have your movies with .ac3 sound (DD5.1) then the best will be PowerDivx....

I have no clue....You should get a full working version with your DVD drive. If not, try looking over at the download.com

Take care

If you are using Windows 2000, then the operating system has a very basic DVD player. This DVD player only operates if you have proper DirectShow filters installed for DVD playback. When you install a program such as PowerDVD, it installs its own Directshow filters. There is a free set of DirectShow filters, you can find it in the downloads section at Doom9's site. Install those, then try the windows 2000 dvd player, and you should be all set. BTW, the windows 2000 dvd player is located at c:/winnt/system32/dvdplay.exe

Hope that helps
