Running a HP laptop with XP service pack 1 and Media Player, version 8.0 preinstalled.

All of sudden, when I attempt to play MP3 files on my Media Player 8.0, I get the following error message: "The requested audio codec is not installed on this system".

Can anyone assist me in what codec I need and where to download it from?

Update to WMP11 and XP SP3 first, then see if you still have the problem.

You already have the MP3 codec WMP would be using. For XP / WMP8, that would be %systemroot%\system32\l3codeca.acm registered under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 , msacm.l3acm .

If either of those pieces is missing, restore them. If both are present and it's still not working, something else is up.

But like Gadget said... um, there's really no good reason to still be running SP1 that I can think of. :)
