i don't know if more recent commericial movie dvds have some sort of anti-piracy software, encoding, or whatever on them, but i am unable to play most recent movie dvds on either my internal or external dvd drives. in fact, neither of the dvd burning drives on my system (LITE-ON DVDRW SH-16A7S and Plextor DVDR PX-712A external burner) will even recognize these commercial dvds.

i began encountering this problem soon after installing far cry 2 (what a crap game!) on my system, which has secuROM copy protection on it. when i uninstalled far cry 2, i followed some steps from some sites online to remove secuROM from my registry, and it is now no longer installed.

i know the problem is with my desktop, b/c my work laptop plays these dvd without any trouble. my desktop has the 30" monitor though, and i like to watch movies on it, so i ham hoping to successfully solve this problem.

i suspect that for whatever reason, the copy protection methods on recent commercial DVDs are preventing my drives from even recognizing the DVDs, which sucks b/c i cannot even watch the films.

so i am wondering if it's possible to update the drivers or firmware for either of my dvd burners. the drivers are old- 7/1/01 from M$ drver 5.1.2535.0 for both the plextor and the lite on. it's likely more recent drivers are available, but i don't know how to find or install them. the "update driver" function in XP (install software automatically) doesn't work ("the wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed." in hardware update wizard).

anyone got any suggestions? this is quite annoying, b/c i bought this 30" lcd monitor largely to watch movies on.

thanks.

PS- it's also not possible in XP hardware wizard to roll back/repair the drivers for either drive, in case i might have messed them up when i was removing secuROM (very doubtful).
