For people who have worked with both, which encoding method looks better for the size, SBC or Xvid? SBC seems pretty solid (and I've had good results as well) but I'm curious how Xvid is, I've heard varying reports. Let me know what you think, thanks

There's a big codec-comparison coming up on doom9.org.

My tests with the latest XviD build (quantisation thresholding disabled) have DivX 3.11 marginally ahead in terms of file size for a fixed quantiser.

However.

I've been noticing lately that MP43 and MP42 are creating quite horrible smearing artifacts as motion trails - even as low as quant=3. Above that, it gets noticably worse, and I wouldn't call it watchable. There appears to be no fix for this, as it is a motion estimation issue with the microsoft code.

Should be an interesting comparison.

I think its still early for XVID. And SBC is still king.
