HEy guys,
One thing i really suck at is trying to figure out what the aspect ratio is for the source. Is there any easy way or software that can make my life easier.

Got an example that we can base our answer from?

The aspect ratio is defined in the source file. How one might find this out depends on the type of file. Playing it might be a place to start. Some players tell you the dimensions of a video. Some renderers (Haali's) do too. You can also look in ffdshow's info page to find out. Mediainfo should also give you this information. Gspot too on some files. Neuron2's tools, DGIndex and successors.

mediainfo says:
"Crank 2 R5 PAL 16:9 is 4:3"
Actually it is 16:9

Looks like rule 6 to me.

Check A:R in software programs like mediainfo, DGindex, Megui etc. If you mistrust reported A:R given by software programs, then just trust your eyes and check if round shapes are true round(not oval due to aspect error) and also for square shapes after applying A:R value. If you can see noticeable A:R error then change to custom A:R value. For DVDs its 4:3 or 16:9 only.
