View Full Version : encoding anamorphic DVD using x264

Hi, I don't have any experience in ripping dvds. But I want to learn, don't ask me why :D just want to try it.
I have a DVD9 with an 1:30h movie, it's PAL 16:9 (720x576). So while watching 16:9 ratio forces it to resize as it was 1024x576. It has no black lines, and I don't need any cropping.
I want to it to my hdd using dvd decrypter. Also I want to encode it by x264 keepping original resolution and then save it to *.mkv + original AC3 5.1 384 kbps sound (no audio encoding, I like it original). The final size I need is 1400 MB.
What resolution should I use? Resize it to 1024x576 or there is the way to encode keepping it anamorphic 720x576? Will there be any issues while watching anamorphic x264 video?
And I don't know which software to use, maybe some free encoding tool with easy GUI for beginners. I would try serveral of them, but I don't know any :)

Use MeGUI and "smart anamorphic encoding", which will encode with square pixels that are stretched on playback to the correct dimensions - just as on the DVD. Basically: D2V creator to index the relevant VOBs and demux audio, AVS Script Creator to correct colors and deinterlace if necessary (and set up the signaling for anamorphic encoding later when you mux), encode with x264 using the profile of your choice and the bitrate copied from the Bitrate Calculator, then mux x264-encoded video and original audio with MKV muxer. Done!

I'm new to video encoding, do you mean I should keep the resolution 720x576?

encode with x264 using the profile of your choice
can you please write some basic parameters
Use Megui and do tick "smart anamorphic encoding" with no resize and cropping.
By the way you can process 5.1 original sound to 192kbps NeroDigital HE AAC 5.1 sound and I can tell you, you won't notice any difference. Here is a nice guide for MeGui x264 convertion (www.digital-digest.com/articles/MeGUI_H.264_Conversion_Guide_page1.html).

Use one of the built-in profiles, such as DXVA-SD-HQ. And yes, don't crop or resize (except to crop black bars, if any; the correct pixel aspect ratio will be preserved, which means the end image will be stretched correctly as if it were cropped after stretching).

The DVD9 R5 was bought only today, it is PAL 720x576 anamorphic as I had written before.
But it has black lines, so I'm not able to keep it anamorphic with correct ratio after ripping, am I?
I will upload a 100 MB sample and some screenshots later

You certainly can keep it properly stretched after ripping. Consider the present case: 16:9 PAL is 1024x576. Let's say you're cropping 10px from the right border, 6px from the left border, and 8 px each from the top and bottom borders. You get this:
(720 x 576) x (correct PAR) = stretched to 1024x576.
(704 x 560) x (correct PAR) = stretched to 1001.2x560.
Since it's anamorphic, the fact that it isn't mod2/mod4/mod8/mod16 isn't a problem: Encode it as 704px wide and then apply the same old "correct PAR" to get the correct dimensions: the original dimensions minus cropping, where cropping is the original width per pixel multiplied by the stretched size of the pixel.

Thank you, I'm ripping the DVD with staxrip gui from the site ERQ gave. It says that megui is for advanced users and you should start with something easier. By the way I have 3 fps encoding, is it o'key for 2 cored intel (2200 Mhz each core) + 2 GB RAM?
I'm using sharktooth's hq-insane profile.
edit2:
This time I didn't crop the video, there were some errors. Tomorrow I'll encode it again with megui and see the difference)
edit3:
I'm using 3 pass method, is it so bad that anyone uses it or what? Everywhere it's said to use 2 pass
edit4:

I'm using sharktooth's hq-insane profile.
Switched to DXVA-HD-HQ, selected 3-pass
and now it's about 70 fps

Guys, thank you so much for your help! Finally I ripped the dvd. Now the video (+audio) is 1400 MB. I can say it is exact the same as source! I can't notice any difference. May be because 6746 kbps were too much for 720*576, but the rip's quality is superb! x264 is a cool encoder :D
It took me about 2 days to encode with 3-pass mode on E4500 :)
Writing library: x264 core 67 r1145M d2e1e1c

I think you don't need 3-pass, 2-pass hQ/extra quality x264 template of Megui will give you superb results with 1800kbps for anamorphic DVDs.
By the way are you sure you were using 6746 kbps in encoder settings because Encoding settings: cabac=1 / ref=8 / deblock=1:-1:-1 / analyse=0x3:0x113 / me=tesa / subme=9 / psy_rd=1.0:0.0 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=32 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=2 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=3 / nr=0 / decimate=0 / mbaff=0 / bframes=3 / b_pyramid=0 / b_adapt=2 / b_bias=0 / direct=3 / wpredb=1 / keyint=250 / keyint_min=25 / scenecut=40 / rc=2pass / bitrate=1680 /

By the way are you sure you were using 6746 kbps in encoder settings because
Are you kidding, I mean the DVD has 6746 kbps bitrate, not the encoded one!:D I used ~1600 kbps settings for 1400 MB size.
PS: I have found a DVDrip on a tracker, and it's not encoded with x264. I don't know which encoder he used, but the quality is much better. It's even better than the DVD9 R5. How is it possible? The realise date of that rip is the 3th of may, while the crank 2 dvd r5 was available in shops only 4 days after on the 7th of may. Anyway... The point is that the final quality somehow got better than was before. May be keeping video anamorphic was not a good idea, because stratching gave better quality... Here are some screenshots (Source, cropped source, my rip, that rip):

You can do the same thing by calling LimitedSharpenFaster about 10 times in sequence.
