View Full Version : TV size matters

I have a large 61" projection TV and the picture quality during playback of my VCDs is faily poor, but not unwatchable.

I use a set-top DVD player (Apex 500W). I noticed that the picture quality is much better when I hook up the DVD player to my 27" set and play my VCDs and will probably be even better when I play them back on a 19" set.

I suppose with TVs its the same as a computer monitor; when you play a video, it looks fine in a small window but will deteriorate greatly when expanded to full screen.

I was wondering if there are any settings I could use when creating my VCDs that will give me good picture quality on large screens like my 61" projection TV?

I'm going to try the "VCD with SVCD resolution" settings that Antonio posted. Maybe that will give me a better picture on my big set.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Vic :)

Why not regular SVCD ? The Apex 500w can decode it. At this screen size you will need full SVCD bitrate (2600)...

1. SVCDs can't hold as much video as VCDs (because more bitrate is needed for a higher resolution) and, hence, require more CDs.
2. SVCDs are more difficult to encode, espically for newbies, and can't be easilly played on computers unlike VCDs which are super compatible.

Basically, the only reason I use VCD is so my friends can view it on their DVD players and computers without any trouble since VCD is so compatible.

Thanks for the suggestion of using the SVCD format but as Taric25 says, I would need to use more than one CD for each video Iam using.

I am transferring all my favorite TV shows to VCD. When I edit out the commercials of these one-hour programs, I end up with about 44 minutes of video. This allows me to encode using a video bitrate of 1800 and an audio bitrate of 224 and fit a whole episode onto one VCD.

Iam really impressed with the audio after transfering to VCD. It is actually enhanced and sounds better on my surround sound system than when I play off the VHS tapes themselves with my stereo VCR.

I'm going to stick with the VCD format because I am very pleased with the quality of video when played back on a 27" set or smaller.

BTW, I am using The Dazzle Digital Video Creator with "Movie Star" software and I recommend it highly; I've had only great results with it.

If anyone would like any tips on this device I would be happy to give any tips that have worked for me.

Thanks again,

Vic :)

zephyrelli:

Go to this site and download my template for SVCD in 1 cd...You can encode about 90 minutes of SVCD nstc(film) per 700MB cd.

Good luck,
