I have a bunch of standard def. movies I want to encode for playback on a hacked ATV and a laptop.

Should I go with mkv or Xvid for encoding?

I want good quality only. no blocking or choppy picture.

I have a mac with both osx and windows 7 64 bit.

What is a good option for encoding my DVDs?

MKV is a container, XviD is a video encoder. They're not comparable. You can use one, both, or either.
