I recently downloaded some flv files, but discovered that some of them will not play back on any of my video app.s (SMPlayer, VLC, Media Player Classic, WMPlayer, etc...).

Presumably this means they're using a new video codec such as H264.

I wondered how I can find out which codec they're using?
Is there something similar to GSpot that can analyse the files?

Also I don't really want to update all of my FFDShow codecs, as in the past I've had problems with this approach.
Is it possible to download just the codec I need, without affecting those others that are already installed?

You should infact be able to use Media Player Classic Home Cinema just fine. Make sure that the decoder/splitter is enabled. You may also have to load the external splitter through the options menu, but I know for a fact that Media Player Classic Home Cinema can play flv files just fine. You wouldn't happen to have a link to the files would you?

The problem has nothing to do with "codecs"; the problem is that H.264-in-FLV is a relatively new combination and your outdated splitter doesn't support it.

Update your splitters.

I'm not sure if it is H264?

I can playback most flv files with Media Player Classic; but not all.

Looking at my FFDShow setup, it seems I do have the H264 codec installed.

Not sure what "splitters" are; or how to update them?
Presumably they split the audio from the video?

I just downloaded Applian FLV Player, and that WILL play the troublesome files.
However I wish to convert them to mp3 (or wav); but my flv to wav converter (by DoremiSoft) doesn't recognise these problem flv files, presumably because of my outdated "splitters"?

Get a 'universal audio converter' then, that is one that grabs to wav any sound sent to the speakers,

in the same way hypercam is a universal video converter, grabs anything on the screen,
then you juat have to find at least one player that works with a file...

Could somebody explain splitters to me?

A splitter (aka source filter) parses your file and passes on the audio and video to the decoders, which in turn pass on the decoded data to the renderers.

Many thanks for the help guys.

I just have a few more questions:
Is there a way to update my flv splitters only, without updating anything else; or would the best approach be to install the Dec 17 2008 update of FFDShow as mentioned above?

Also, other than DoReMiSoft, are there any flv-to-wav or flv-to-mp3 converters I could try.

Finally are there any mp4-to-mp3 converters? (I.e. I want to throw away the video and just keep the audio content.)

That ffdshow version is outdated. Just get the latest one.
