View Full Version : Who invented the .MOD files?!?!

Does anyone have any experience with these? They have become a royal pain in my ass - They are supposedly recording in 720x480 but with an aspect ratio 0f 16:9 (which should really be 720x405).. Right??

Well anyways I'm trying to render the video to AVI but I'm sending it through a rapid transfer applet which grabs the file off the camera compresses it and adds a timestamp -

The problem is when I get the AVI, no matter what settings I use for resolution or aspect ratio it skews the image!

I've been going back and forth between Adobe and AVS but cant seem to figure this out and I'm using a Canon FS100.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Can you upload small .mod file somewhere?

Hmm, what are some good sites to host from? I dont think I should be hosting them from my work server ;)

OK, this video looks normal exept one thing - Display Aspect Ratio is wrong. You should resize video to 16x9 manually or leave it as is (720x480) and use mp4 of mkv comtainer to set proper Display Aspect Ratio.
Yea, something is wrong with the camera, but even if highlighted info will be right, you still may need to do resize, depending on which software you using.

What? He wants 16x9, video recorded as it should be but Aspect ratio flag is wrong.

No, it should not be 720x405

That resized image looks perfect - But what I'm doing is sending the MOD file through a Applet that compresses it to Divx and from there I pull that AVI into an editing program - but thats where the image looks messed up in Adobe (or AVS Video editor). Let me get a link to the Divx output file and see if you can look at that..

GlobalMscott

Ok heres the Mod file converted to Divx through our applet. It looks more like its supposed to but wont open up into an editing program for me correctly..

And here is the video after I run it through AVS video editor:

http://www.mediafire.com/?j3ibtmzygby

The video isnt stretching out to the sides and so its throwing the black blocks on the left and right side...

Look, I'll try to make it clear... Your video allways will be 720x480. Video should be stretched to 16x9 (853x480) durring playback. So you should resize your video to any 16x9 resolution you like, durring conversion.
By the way I suggest you to use a little more professional software, result from AVS video editor is horrible...

P.S.
Sorry for bad English.

Ok, I understand that now, but what I still cant get to understand is why the video doesnt open correctly into Adobe Premiere Pro. I dont use AVS I was just testing it since Adobe has an issue decoding Divx files on the fly..

Its opened correctly! What do you expect to see there? If you set 16x9 resolution durring creating project in Premiere - video will not be resized. You should reencode avi properly (with resize) or apply resize filter in Premiere.

I also edit .mod files in adobe.
And I had to manually set the aspect ratio from 4:3 as it was read from the files it had opened (which actually was in 16:9) to 16:9 using the "Interpret Footage" shown in the screenshot below.

http://www.lern2play.org/pics/cs3-aspect.jpg

After setting the correct pixel aspect ratio from above method I export it into a huffyuv .avi file from which I open it in a video encoding program of my choice.

I hope this info helped you somehow :)

Its weird, I cant even open Mod files into Adobe, but I can play them through WMP - Do you have to have a certain Plugin or something? Also - When I'm in Adobe I dont get the aspect ratio option when I click Interpret Footage...

You can choose the pixel aspect ratio when entering "Interpret Footage"
also:
http://eturkov.blogspot.com/2008/05/working-with-mod-files-in-adobe.html

Follow that guide.
putting that ac3 decoding file into the premiere main directory,
having ac3filter installed and renaming all the .mod files to .mpg did the trick for me :)
(even though the guide says renaming to .m2v , but that didn't work for me)

edit:

glad you solved it ! :)

Yea, .mod is just renamed .mpg (or .vob?) so you can rename it back to .mpg

Have you tried SDcopy ? It respects 16.9 AR

They are supposedly recording in 720x480 but with an aspect ratio 0f 16:9 (which should really be 720x405).. Right??!Wrong... The MPEG-2 video stream "does" have a resolution of 720x480 pixels. However the video stream also contains "aspect ratio signalling" which is able to change the shape of the pixels from square to rectangular (ie: non-square) upon playback.

Just drag and drop the .MOD files into DVDPatcher v1.06 and change its properties ;)

Anyway, the nearest MOD-16 size would be 400 or 416 pixels. Not 405!
