Sorry if this isn't necessarily the right section for my query. It's been a while since I've been in these parts.

Ok, my problem is this. Attempting a backup of a DVD concert show to Xvid mpeg4 via good old Vdubmod the resulting avi comes out shortened by several minutes and with the sound completely out of whack.

My source files were four linked vobs that I spliced with vobjoiner. I demuxed before-hand and did dual encodes: once straight out of vdubmod as well as one with avisynth. No filters or resizing. One paradox caught my eye. Vdubmod shows the source frame rate as 29.97 whereas ffdshow in mplayer classic indicates it to be a speed that 'varies' in the 25fps zone. However the new avi encode reports a steady 29.97. Could this be a problem of an incorrect/corrupted header? If so, what to do?

Two other, if lesser problems, are the aspect ratio has shifted becoming horizontally squeezed (mpegmodifier solution I hope) and the interlace lines are back and I can't seem to get rid of them with either ffdshow or vlc.

Any help? Thanks in advance

Well, just to weigh in on my own post and inform any or all that are interested that the I've given up on what has turned out to be an impossible enterprise. It since occurred to me that the source being of dreaded NTSC origin (I'm in PAL-land) there was likely some IVTC issue to deal with that was causing the erratic sync problem and possibly the variable frame-rate. The latter I'd NEVER seen before.

Upon close inspection of my source DVD, I also noticed that incredibly it was exhibiting four, yep 4, separate aspect ratio images within the 16x9 frame of its running time. Constantly switching back and forth. The footage apparently is a hodge-podge of old 16mm clips and 35mm stuff squeezed and cropped that at turns seemed like 4x3, 5x4, 7x5 all the way out to 6x4 (best guesses from round reference points in the film). Nothing standard....Also interlacing was a mix, I think, of both the real and phony variety. Never seen anything quite like it.

So I've decided to let this sleeping dog lie and not be tempted to blow this mess into a disaster. Until the next stumper....

Hi!

What's the title of this problematic NTSC DVD?
