View Full Version : Authoring app that accepts 480px horizontal?

Hello.. It seems popular authoring applications like TMPGEnc Author 3.x insist on horizontally resizing source videos to 704px (from a source that is 480x576 in my size). Is there an app that doesn't resize and just inserts the proper AR values for the final VOB files? Aren't most set-top DVD players more flexible nowadays? Does NeroVision Express do what I'm looking for? :thanks:

This is not a HD-DVD or BD authoring, however ...
Since 480x, or 544x, or 428x576 (bzw. 480) is not a DVD permitted size, virtually no authoring software allows them. There is however the patching method to fool the software that the MPEG file is 720 (bzw. 704) pixels wide. Google for this ;)

Thanks will look it up! I thought the paranthesis around (HD) meant that this forum was for all three formats (the defunct HDDVD, BD and DVD).. Sorry :)

It's for all three formats (the defunct HDDVD, BD and DVD), but now most people is interested on Bluray Authoring.
:helpful:.

Hehe I figured so :P Btw patching the MPEG2 into 704x576 and now TMPGEnc imports it but it pads the missing pixels with dummy data and doesn't stretch at all. I have NeroVision Express 3 installed but Nero Recode 2 doesn't accept importing MPG files. Unless I'm supposed to use another app within NVE?

@Pulstar
Hi!
You might want to determine if your standalone DVD player plays SVCDs (this matches the resolution you've stated), MEPGs/MPEG2s, or (if necessary to convert) DivX-compressed .AVIs...

Try as I might I can't get MPEG4 to look like MPEG2 (diminished sharpness and too much smoothness) so I'm sticking with MPEG2s for now.. If there's really no other way then I'll resize horizontally using lanczos3 and take it from there. Thanks to all who replied!

You have to figure it to the end :p
So,
1. patch the MPG to 720 or 704
2. import the MPG in TMPG...
2'. click OK several times to have it fully imported
3. repatch it back
4. continue working in TMPG... as normal - no green bars, except in the preview (track menu), everything is OK, including the output
You need to patch the first header only, it's fast and foolproof.
Have a look into SAT/DVB forums, as most transmissions are not DVD compliant (eg 544, 480 etc.)

Sorry I was referring to TMPGEnc DVD Author 3.1.2 which can't properly handle a patched MPEG2 stream.. But thanks for the tips at any rate :)
Edit - Nero Vision Express 3 doesn't accept patched MPEG2 either. Weird.

I still use 1.6, 3.x is problematic as it keeps on reencoding my footage. If you are happy with the templates, downgrade to 1.6, you can do DVD9 as easy as DVD5, just ignore the size warning. Layer-Break-Pause is just a command for DVD-players, most of them do this automatically, but you can place one with IfoEdit (place a chapter in the right position in TMPG.. beforehand) if you want. But I never had a problem about patched files in any TMPG.. I used.
There are softwares that can be easily tricked (they check only the first header) and ones that cannot be fooled (they check the stream). Try the freeware DVD Author GUI.
