View Full Version : How to avoid blocking/mosaic when using a sharpener?

I'm using MSharpener, and when I encode a video, the dark areas, which contains some blocking, gets magnified by the sharpening. Someone told me to split the video and apply different filters for each segment. I think that is a bit tedious, is there a better way/filter? Is there a plugin that remove these artifacts?

BTW, I noticed that my encode has really blurred lines, like on walls and bricks. I'm using these plugins

MSharpen, GradFun2DBmod(), Tweak(Sat=1.1), MDegrain 3

I think GradFun2DBmod is doing this. Can GradFun2DBmod blur lines?

Here is a picture of what I'm talking about.

Well, MSharpen works by making a mask of the areas you want to sharpen... but there's really nothing sharp in this picture in the first place for it to base a mask upon. It's all equally blurry (and ugly).

gradfun2db sometimes picks up areas which don't really have banding/blocking as such and debands them. If this happens on a line (or anywhere with real detail), most of that detail is lost.

It doesn't look like grandfun2dbmod was run on it judging by the banding in the background.

There a picture of the source to compare it too?

After looking at the source, it isn't much difference.

Is there a way to get rid of the ringing in that image?

An excellent example of Crap in -> Crap out. Now, it's not the most terrible source, but what I'm specifically speaking about is the lack of detail or defined lines. Most sharpeners will have a difficult time producing a sharp image if the image is already excessively soft to begin with (As is the case here). Granted, the whole point of the sharpener is to make it look sharp, but you need to have some degree of fine lines and detail for it to work effectively!

My best suggestion is to try another sharpener and see if it works. It may, it may not. Chances are it won't judging by your image.

I liken it to sharpening custard, sharp custard is still soft :sly:

You can sharpen something like this, you can even sharpen something like this without causing halos, but there isn't any way to avoid killing the gradients. The best you can do is gradfun->sharpen->strongdenoise->gradfun.

What do you mean by "ringing"? What I've been lead to believe is ringing means what looks like an extra outline all around something.

I think what you're referring to is called banding. Banding is when the colors in an image don't blend smoothly together (in a gradient) but look like bands of colors instead. You can see it in your image near the sides were the walls are and next to the man in the picture.
