How to tell if it's BD+?

I just got Quantum of Solace only to realize that it says Fox on the disc and is BD+. I usually use this list to determine if a Blu-Ray is from Fox so I can avoid it since I use MakeMKV on Linux and it doesn't support BD+:

but Quantum of Solace is listed as MGM. Has anyone found an easy and reliable method to determine if a Blu-Ray is from Fox without physically inspecting it?

Fox and MGM are the only ones using BD+ right now. I think MGM is a subsidiary of FOX (kinda like Dreamworks is to Paramount) which is why MGM is using BD+ too.

Maybe you remember that ggking7 is a pure linux user, if he can't remove the "copy protection" it is a "viewing protection" for him because there is not a single licensed player for BD on linux.

We are actually considering some sort of a Linux version of AnyDVD - after all it's really a stupid situation with Linux practically being singled out and left without any possibility to play blu-rays. And that only because of a copy protection that doesn't work...

We'll think about some solution....

Have you tried using the BluRay ripping capability of the free trial version of "DVDFab Platinum" or "DVDFab Gold" (Available as part of the download of freeware "DVDFab HD")?

(If I remember correctly, it performed a good rip of "Die Hard", a Fox BD+ title)

I've specifically read in a few different places that AnyDVD doesn't work via wine because of its "driver" method. I appreciate the suggestion though.

I think that this is a small thing that we the users can do to protest Fox's usage of BD+. I don't think it will do much to make them stop doing it, but it's all we can do. So I applaud him if he is willing to do that.

Wow, first you guys talk about making a Sly Player, then you talk about giving it away for free, now AnyDVD in Linux? What's next, Intel CPUs in Macs? Oh wait...

I guess the best thing would be a warning on the label of the Blu Ray saying it contains BD+, but this would never happen because:

A. The average user wouldn't know what this meant, and it would probably lead to a tech support nightmare for licensed players.
B. Why should they warn users about something that is part of the Blu Ray spec? The warnings I have seen all say that the disc will only play on licensed players, and any licensed player will handle the BD+ just fine (supposedly).

I think that if Slysoft wasn't breaking BD+ left and right (thanks Peer!) more companies would start using it too. Until that changes, just keep Fox and MGM on your blacklist. (heheh, AACS LA isn't the only ones that can use blacklisting :devil:).

DVDFab doesn't handle BD+.
Die Hard was one of the old pre-media check titles that would play from disc with BD+ intact using early versions of PowerDVD.

AnyDVD HD is still the only alternative for BD+ titles.

Sorry setarip_old, I mis-read your post. I've used DVDFab via wine before and it works OK. Last I checked, it didn't support Blu-Ray but it looks like that has changed. I'm going to try it now since I'm having problems with makemkv.

It looks like DVDFab 5 doesn't work with Blu-Ray (I think) and DVDFab 6 doesn't work via wine. I just tried both.
