View Full Version : converting *.mpg to *.avi

I have some old VCD that I want to convert to *.avi files. I am using VCDGear to convert the *.dat file to *.mpg files. The *.mpg files have good lip sync but when I convert to *.avi the lip sync goes badly off. I have tried ImTOO and Auto GK but both give bad Lip Syncs.
Any Suggestions?
Thanks

Virtualdub, and use the delay audio in audio-interleaving

I have always changed just the extension *.dat to *.mpg, never tried VCDGear. For avi convertion used Virtual Dub or Avidemux. I rarely convert VCD mpg files to avi (with recompressing/re-encoding to xvid/x264) due severe loss of picture quality in encoding process.

ERQ: changing the extension of a VCD DAT file does not change the format to a MPG file, it is still a DAT file just with a MPG extension, in saying that it is a quick hack to get most software to recognise them, VCD gear demuxes the DAT container and muxes VCD's back into a proper MPG container, which will fix compatibility with software/hardware that is sticking strictly to the standards.
JXBlack: Is there any reason they have to be AVI's? Converting a already compressed (very inefficiently at that) MPG to an AVI is only going to cause more quality loss, your better off leaving them as MPG's as just about every hardware/software player will play them back anyway.

i usually get a picture improvement, by filtering, from mpg1 to avi, and much less size
anyway several mpg1 have a bitrate of 2000kbs or more, some 4000kbs.....

the fact is that you dont need this to convert to avi,
does the ripping converts vobs into mpeg2??

and with h264 the advantage increases
anyway several mpg1 have a bitrate of 2000kbs or more, some 4000kbs.
But not in VCDs it has limited bitrate for mpg1(1150KBit/s).

I know that but I never encountered any hardware or software issue with that. But yes that's the proper way to convert dat's to mpg.

Try Virtualdub resync your avi's. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=746611#post746611
So in my opinion leave VCD mpgs as mpgs. Don't convert unless you have special need to do so.
what is h264 ?
It's a video compression standard, x264 video codec is based on that. Just google the term "h264" for more info.

H.264 is a standard for video compression, and is equivalent to MPEG-4 Part 10, or MPEG-4 AVC (for Advanced Video Coding).
