View Full Version : Veteran advice on "Super?"

So I'm a noob. I've been playing with ripping, encoding, & burning for months now. I've played with most software a bit. I just stumbled onto Super.
It seems like the holy grail of re-encoding & ripping (no decrypting) it can supposedly even handle HD-DVDs & BR. It looks like it accepts pretty much any compression & container you could throw at it (at least less exotic ones).
And its totally free!?
Is there a reason I never see anyone recommend or talk about it? Reading its feature list & FAQs it seems like exactly what I've been looking for (my rig is currently cluttered with dozens of confusing apps that do only some of these tasks)
Am I missing something?
Thanks for the advice guys (I did a search for "super" here, but wasn't seeing anything matching this).

It's a pretty crappy interface for a whole bunch of open source tools.
It generally isn't talked about because everything it can do, something else can do better.

I'll agree the interface isn't the most visually appealing, but honestly that is of little importance to me. Functionality is paramount in my mind.
I like things simple. I'm not going to be hammering out command-line instructions until my fingers bleed and my brain turns to mush. I'm sick and tired of trying to remember which of a half-dozen or so different single apps I need to run in order to rip an HD-DVD, then reencode to something else, then maybe burn to DVD-5.
I just want to pop in a DVD, HD-DVD, or BR and start ripping/encoding to whatever with only a few clicks of the mouse &/or keyboard.
What can you suggest that does everything this does which is better and GUI based?
EDIT: Just thought I'd add, I've tried Avidemux a little bit, but I couldn't get it to import video_ts or vob's properly (maybe just user ignorance/error), I also didn't see any support for HD content.

You asked for an opinion and then lecture Dark after he gives you one. Strange way to operate IMHO.

I was not lecturing him, however I apologize if my reply was interpreted that way.
I was merely presenting a counterpoint to his comment that something else does it better. Based on my limited experience over the past months this program seems fairly unique.
I'll be the first to admit though I am very low on the knowledge totem pole so was hoping for insights or a better GUI based option that I was overlooking.

Karkas, so many of the issues you raised could be addressed by using the form search feature. A lot of people just getting their feet wet with encoding are drawn to apps like SUPER and MediaCoder which promise all-in-one functionality and then turn out to be incomplete and frustrating. Consider the following: It takes more time to learn how to use all the features of SUPER, especially in concert with one another, than it does to read the DVD Decrypter or DGIndex or Avisynth or x264 documentation and use others' questions to set up an effective workflow.

I'm not sure to what exactly you are referring... I am familiar with the stand alone dedicated single apps you pointed out and my I did a search for this software with little to no results.
I want to be clear, I'm not asking anyone to give me a encoding tutorial. I am just asking for those who know this program to give me specific examples of what is "bad" about it.

Is there something specifically you have in mind or just a general feeling of frustrations based on a somewhat confused looking GUI?
Thanks in advance, and please don't take my replies the wrong way, I'm not trying to be inflammatory here.:)

things that promise everything are usually
a. incredibly complex to use (even if they seem easy at first) to do what you want exactly
b. are waste of time on the long run, because you will not learn anything useful
c. will auto-install bunch of c*** onto your system
d. i'am sure there is more

Look at the H.264 options for instance. In what way is this useful, other than to totally defeat the ability of x264 to use sensible options?
