View Full Version : How to decrypt 'bonus view' (picture in picture) content?

Hello,

I'm wondering if someone can explain how to decode a picture in picture track from a Blu-ray?

Specifically, the Blu-ray of The Robe features an alternate version of the film (it was the first CinemaScope (2.55:1) widescreen film, and was simultaneously shot in both widescreen and regular Academy ratios because not many cinemas had CinemaScope screens in 1953) the 1.33:1 version can be watched as a a picture in picture content that on the disc is called "Bonus View". It is overlayed on the bottom of the widescreen image. I am trying to figure out how to extract the picture in picture version of the film.

I am assuming it is on the disc and just added as an overlay, but I can't find where it is.

I have AnyDVD HD, and have downloaded other tools such as BDinfo and TSmuxer, but I don't know what to look for in the structure of the disc.

Thanks.

That Bonus View feature is a second video/audio stream of the main feature. All you need to do is to demultiplex that video stream and the corresponding audio stream. I can't remeber what PIDs these streams have but IIRC they have higher numbers than the streams from the main feature.

Thanks. I've had my Blu-ray drive for one day so I have no idea how to do this. But I found a HD Stream Extractor in MeGUI which seems to allow me to extract the bonus view stream from the main title (the biggest one). I can't figure out which is the right audio stream, so I am just extracting all of them.

EDIT: OK, I've managed to extract the picture, but I can't figure out where the sound is (there is something like 6 sound tracks on the disc, plus something called DTS Express).

When I play the bonus view content in PowerDVD it doesn't matter which audio track I select, it just plays the audio for the bonus view content. Does this mean the audio track is hidden under a different playlist?

I still can't find the audio track. When TSMuxer opens the main TS file (that contains both the regular and PIP video) it gives an error message:

Could this possibly mean that TSMuxer can't currently 'see' the audio track associated with the picture in picture video?
