View Full Version : mass DVD conversion & AR

I'm considering converting my entire DVD collection (or most of it) to x.264/mkv files. I'd like to automate this process as much as possible, since it'll be a long & largely repetitive one.

I'll most likely be using meGUI & a custom one-click profile or something.

One thing I'm thinking about is the aspect ratio... there are so many AR's on movies. It would be fastest, I think, to just stick to the 16:9 AR from the DVD, and just not crop the black bars for movies that have AR > 1.778.

So, is there any huge benefit to cropping the black bars out? I'll be playing these files back on my 50" plasma, via an xbmc-enabled XBOX, streaming from my PC's hdd.

Thanks for any ideas/tips/suggestions.

I suppose if there's really a big benefit to cropping the black bars, that I could make several different profiles for each AR. But then I'd have to determine the AR of each movie before starting the encode process. I was envisioning a fairly brainless process of stick the disc in, click go, for each (or most) of my dvd's.
