I've ripped some DVD in x264 (DXVA SD HQ profile) and aac-he within MeGUI / NeroAacEnc (multi language kept -> 2 or 3 audio tracks), and now wondering which container I should use.
I see the following advantages/drawbacks:
+ mp4 / - mkv)
1a) Standardized content: better HW support?
When I look at the profiles in MeGUI, the standalone HD/BD player and the DXVA, most related profiles are using AVC high level 4.1. Does it ensures compatibility? Concerning the SW support, while the mp4 file can be read e.g. within powerdvd, dedicated players offer more options / better respect DAR, and the support may be better for mkv file...
+ mkv / - mp4
2a) flexibility: we can put almost everything in mkv, no restriction of the content. It concerns particularly the ac3 and vobsub tracks which are not always properly recocgnized in a mp4 container.
2b) clear extension: I can associate mkv to my video player and mka to my audio player (foobar), while a mp4 file can be video and/or audio.
2c) muxer: IMHO, mmg is more user friendly/offers more options than Yamb or any other mp4 muxer. Moreover, the mux into mkv is a lot more faster than the multi check done via mp4box
For playback on my PC, mkv looks like a winner, especially because the venerable TCMP is still my main video player.
However, a bigger argument will be the robustness, where matroska claims to have a "High error recovery". Is any of both better than the other? I mean, if some sectors in the middle of the file cannot be read (e.g. scratch on DVDR or local HDD failure), what happen?
