hey

I wish to backup some of my dvds to mkv, so can anyone tell me basicly how to get my dvd to a video file that I can encode them?

I know how to encode and demux so all I need to do is dvdripping and demuxing or whatever is needed to get the dvd to a convertible file,

( I want to backup movies and series and include english subs)

and sorry to be extra needy, but if anyone knows of somewhere where I can find some good x264 profiles Ill be most gratefull :D
( or megui profiles )

thanks alot :D

Did you use search or look on google? This is a very basic question that is well covered in existing guides.

it seems pretty basic, but theres many different tools and methods, and this is a forum that is known for backing up dvds and encoding

so I would trust this advice over others.

but.. I have found a guide lol

close or delete this if you want.

For all my dvd ripping needs, I use Auto Gordian Knot. It installs all the various programs to automatically rip and convert the dvd to the parameters you set. I don't recall it making files that take up a lot of room.

MeGUI for me...

I use DVD Decrypter on my DVDs to get them ripped, then run that through DGIndex to get files ready for scripting into x264. Use BeSweet for encoding audio. I am backing up to MP4, but mkv works just the same.

Hundreds of guides out there, just do something simple, search.

DVD -> DVD Decrypter in IFO mode, selecting only the streams and program chain that I want -> DGIndex to index and demux audio -> MeGUI to make AVS Script and encode video to x264 -> (Optional) extract VOBsubs with VSRip -> Mux x264-encoded video, original audio, and (optional) subs to Matroska with MKVMergeGUI.

Blu-ray -> Decrypt and copy to external HDD with AnyDVD HD -> Check playlists with BDInfo -> Demux, downmix/transcode as necessary with eac3to -> DGIndex (MPEG-2), DGAVCIndex (H.264), or DirectShowSource(VC-1) to serve to Avisynth -> Resize to 720p -> Encode with x264 using MeGUI -> (Optional) SUP subs to VOBsub with BDSup2Sub -> Mux x264-encoded video, original audio, and (optional) subs to Matroska with MKVMergeGUI.

Occasionally I'll even mux in named chapter lists, depending on how well ChapterGrabber is behaving.
