View Full Version : Recommend a quicktime motionjpeg alternative for 64 bit decoder?

Hey fellas
Here's my dilemma, very soon I'll start using Cubase 5 64bit in Vista 64 and I almost forgot that beside the 64bit native audio plugins I'll also need a 64bit decoder when composing for video.
Normally I'd use quicktimes motionjpeg encoded straight from Media Composer as it's the simplest way but since quicktime doesn't have a 64bit windows version I need an alternative.
I understand there's ffdshow x64 which I could then use via directshow option in Cubase to play a lot of formats. So any recommendation for a codec based on decoding speed/file size efficiency would be much appreciated.
Cheers :) And sorry if I didn't explain properly what I'm after :o

MJPG? :D
ffdhsow supports mjpg, no problem!

OMG I'm so retarded, I wasn't even aware that ffdshow plays quicktime files :scared::D
Well, you learn something new everyday, thanks Misfit :thanks:

Well, hold on there skipper :)
ffdshow doesn't split MOV files, but it can play MJPG if it's stored in a container that DirectShow can split and pass the decoding off to ffdshow.
In other words, AVI, MKV, something like that would probably work fine. Probably..

Just to make it clear: Motion-JPEG is not specific to QuickTime at all.
MJPEG is a video format supported on many platforms. QuickTime is a multi-media framework, that supports various video formats.
But certainly QuickTime is not the only software to encode/decode MJPEG video...

@Mulder - yes off course, I was mostly referring to Quicktime as it's the quick/simple workflow from Avid to audio daw like pro tools/cubase. Then again I didn't know much up to this point, just recently I noticed ffdshow has it's own mjpeg variant so I won't talk too much crap :p hehe
@Misfit - hmm I uninstalled Quicktime on this computer and tried opening with media player classic (a .mov h264 file as it's the only thing I have at hand) and ffdshow popped up and started decoding. I guess mpc handled the splitting then? Guess I'll go do some reading :)
And now that I think about it, I believe I could get Media Composer to output straight with ffdshow's encoder. As I remember it's output codec setting window is similar to that of vdub. Guess I'll give it a shot tomorrow at work
Forgive me, I'm still a bit drunk from yesterdays barbecue

Yes, MPC and MPC-HC have internal .MOV splitters. I think Haali's splitter can split MOV files as an external filter (e.g., available to any Directshow graph) or you can try Gabest's. As to which is better/less buggy I have no idea.

OOooh awesome, searched around and found Haali has an experimental version of x64 out, I automatically concluded there wasn't one when I saw nothing at his site.
Guess that will solve my 64 bit problems then
Cheerio guys :thanks:
