ok ive got some large mkv's that i would like to recode to a slightly smaller size eg. one is 8.74gb and i would like to get it down to 7.96, so it fits on a dual layer disc. are there any gui's which would let me do this easily, whilst retaining most of the quality.

Just re-rip the source so you know what you're getting into ahead of time. This has the added help of being able to pick your audio and sub streams to save space to allocate to the video.

Probably use the tools > bitrate calculator :).

You say you have an mkv but that is just a container. What is the video stream? You can use mediainfo to find out.

BTW, how were you able to encode your video source and mux to mkv without knowing how to encode?

there not my streams. in the past i used to use autogk, but things have moved on big time since then, and instead of using xvid codec i plan to use x264 or h264 im guessing.
