View Full Version : Help needed ripping with smartripper then using dvd2svcd to do the rest.

The ripping process failed using dvd2svcd but an image was created using the first 4 vobs which where ripped, leaving the final 3 unripped.
I have ripped these 3 final vobs using smartripper but the problem is I do not know how to use dvd2svcd to do the existing processes to use these .vob files to make the final image as normally it is so simple just selecting the .ifo then let it do the rest.

Thanks

I wouldn't trust mixing rippers, just use smartripper for all the vobs. Then load the IFO and disable DVD ripping in DVD2SVCD.

The official position on using a third ripper is that you are better off piping the ripped files through DVD2SVCD's internal ripper.
Just copy the ripped files into a temp directory and point the internal ripper at the IFO file in that temp directory and have DVD2SVCD re-rip the files into your normal conversion directory.
After the rip is complete you can delete the original VOB files.
This way avoids a possible out of Sync issue that has happened in the past.

So should I just scrap the first disk m8 and delete all files in the folder.
I take it to use dvd2svcd and smart ripper, i firstly rip with smartripper then go into dvd2svcd then select the ifo file on dvd in conversion but in the dvd rip tab I do not tick activate dvd ripping.
Where abouts do I point dvd2svcd to the vob files I have ripped ie. under what tab.

The gift is only my 2 nd rip but does not seem as good qoulity as my first which I used cce demo where as for the gift I used 2.51 sp.
Both on 80 min disks!! Any ideas as to why qoulity decreased.

And finally I do not think the burner I am using supports overburn as I have had probs burning the 800 meg images, will I still have problems even if I select 740 meg for a 80 min disk.
Each time I change anything in the bitrate tab it says my bitrate is wrong do I want to use default bitrate eg. If I put 1 cd for 75 mins and second cd as 75 mins for a 150 minute film!!

Thanks Alot For The Help

Sorry markrb I was typing my post before I saw your reply and posted it so it is mostly irrelavant.

So what you are saying is use smartripper to rip to temp directory.
Then point the internal ripper (is this in the conversion tab where it asks for .ifo) to the ifo file (i take it the largest) in the temp directory, I will need to rip more files there than just the vobs wont I to temp!!.
Then select start ripping as I would normally.

Do you know of a guide available for this method.

Thanks again

"So should I just scrap the first disk m8 and delete all files in the folder."

Yes

"I take it to use dvd2svcd and smart ripper, i firstly rip with smartripper then go into dvd2svcd then select the ifo file on dvd in conversion but in the dvd rip tab I do not tick activate dvd ripping.

That's what I thought originally, but as markrb has informed us that can lead to syncing issues, so re-rerip the already ripped files using internal routines. So do tick activate dvd ripping. Just make sure the smartripper ripped vobs are in a temporary directory like mark said. Load the IFO file in the conversion tab.

"The gift is only my 2 nd rip but does not seem as good qoulity as my first which I used cce demo where as for the gift I used 2.51 sp.

A number of possible reasons - could be source quality, length (longer film=lower average bitrate=lower quality), aspect ratio (greater viewable area=more bitrate needed), number of paases you chose...

"And finally I do not think the burner I am using supports overburn as I have had probs burning the 800 meg images, will I still have problems even if I select 740 meg for a 80 min disk."

Maybe your bitrate settings are wrong, see below.

"Each time I change anything in the bitrate tab it says my bitrate is wrong do I want to use default bitrate eg. If I put 1 cd for 75 mins and second cd as 75 mins for a 150 minute film!!"

If you want a 150 min film on 2 cds (it should be on 3 cds though), make sure there is a line in the bitrate tab that says "between [insert any value lower than 150] and [insert any value higher than 150] mins use 2 cd size 800". e.g. between 120 and 160 mins.

Thanks m8 you and mark are a great help, I am struggling a bit to explain my probs as i'm at home 20 mins drive from my sisters house where I rip and my pc has no dvd drive etc so I cannot really check things out straight away.

Exactly what files do I select in smartripper to rip to temp directory m8 as the ifo business is confusing me (do I rip the ifo to temp or rip just vobs to temp and select ifo on dvd )

Cheers guys off to bed although I'm sure i'll be back tommorow.

When using SmartRipper you rip an angle.
Basically just choose the longest one.
Set the output directory on the bottom to a temp directory and hit go.

There is a complete guide on Doom9.org.

Just select guides, VCD And SVCD, DVD2AVI, CCE or TMPG, then click on ripping that will give you the SmartRipper guide.

You can burn up to about 806mb on a 80 Minute/700mb disc when doing SVCD's.

When doing the re-rip there will only be one IFO file to choose in the temp directory that you ripped with SmartRipper.

Only do this when 2 things happen.
1. Internal Routines or Vstip fails.
2. Multiple DVD's that you wish to encode as one.
