Want a job encoding video?

Hi folks,

As some of you know, I work for Vudu, a company in Santa Clara, CA that provides a a video-on-demand system through the interwebs to a TV via a set top box. You can check us out at www.vudu.com

We're starting a big encoding push, and are looking to hire somebody in the area to assist with handling all this encoding!

Required skills would definitely include excellent computer skills, H.264 encoding, some AviSynth etc... If you're a denizen of Doom9, you probably have the requisite skills :)

Basic *nix/Cygwin and Perl scripting are a huge plus!

This is a temporary position, starting as soon as possible, and continuing until August 1.

Oh god, how I could use this right now... Editing and Motion Graphics work has dried up around me (NY area, but student status prevents commuting to the city).

You know it honestly surprises me though that encoding isn't in higher demand these days... and by these days, I mean the last few years now that compression for the web has become significantly more prevalent. There's a variety of services that I'm sure many of us can offer, but the ironic part is our experience is highly theoretical, yet not at all practical. For example, knowledge of interlacing patterns, analogue interference, noise reduction, video standards, and format conversions isn't uncommon here, and some notable members write various applications of these (and the rest of us - including myself - simply use the plugins/scripts...).

I'll go on a rant here, but let's be honest: The majority of people working in video (Whether it be production or post) have no CLUE what they're really doing on a technical level. A lowly encoder such as myself may not be capable of writing an inverse telecine algorithm (I've recently seen an ad for this), but I can generally explain the concepts behind it, as can many others here. We KNOW what we're dealing with, and can be valuable employees to so many companies. It pains me everytime I'm at work (Hah, when I *have* work) to see a "professional" in the field for X amount of years (Often times over 10) not even realize the difference between interlaced and progressive video. And for those of us here who have a career in video? You've all dealt with this before; editing at the 60i stage despite being a telecined source, making lossy copy after lossy copy of a video, poorly transferring film, running any dub through *multiple* composite processes, etc.

I can keep going. The ravings of an unemployed... video guy (what the hell am I? Cameraman, Editor, Motion Graphics Artist, Encoder?) are endless.

That must be a FUN job. I love encoding videos. Damn I would do this job even without pay!
