View Full Version : PS3 and AAC 5.1

I created form a DVD a mp4 video file.
I converted the video succesfully with x264 and converted (not so easely) also succesfully the AC3 audio stream to a LC AAC 5.1.
Now, what should I do to make it playable on a PS3 with a 5.1 audio system?
I tried it on a PS3 of a friend of mine (I don't own it) but we could only get it work as a normal "stereo" and not in multichannel. Where could it be the problem?
Or, better, is there a way to go keeping the file as it is?
I know for sure that when I convert a dvd into a xvid+ac3.avi the audio plays great on all 6 channels but I really wouldn't like to convert it in another format than the x264+aac.mp4.
Thank you.:helpful:

PS3 only supports 2 channel AAC audio. You're stuck with Xvid+AC3 if you want 5.1
OR
You could mux to an m2ts and keep DTS etc...but that doesn't really sound what you're after either.
Xbox 360 has similar limitations...There is no "ideal solution" for the PS3\360.

Well the difference is the PS3 downconverts the 5.1 AAC to stereo and the Xbox just won't play the file.

Very sad to hear this...
If there is no way to go with the .mp4 container, what could I use to play a h264video file united to WHATEVER audio 5.1 format?
I'm trying to guess:
1) Avi supports AC3 5.1 but not h264 (not in a good way at least)
2) Mp4 supports h264 but not AC3, and now I find that AAC 5.1 is not supported by the PS3 itself.
3) mkv that could handle both (h264 and AC3 5.1) is not supported by the PS3 (even if we all hope that one day the support will arrive).
Am I missing any option?

Can confirm that PS3 will not play a 5.1 AAC audio track by itself. However, if you mux it to a video and play it, you will have 5.1 AAC from PS3. I then tried doing this for a 7.1 AAC audio track, but the system froze up. But I was also having a hard time playing that 7.1 AAC track on my PC as well.

2) Mp4 supports h264 but not AC3. An official way to mux AC3 in MP4 has been added sometime in the second half of last year. Of course that doesn't help you since the PS3 and the XBox don't support it.
Have you thought about buying a Western Digital HD-TV (cheap), Popcornhour (many features) or some other stand alone player? Might be easier then worrying about your current hardware.
Also Divx7 uses AVC and AAC in MKV so maybe the PS3 or XBox will add support for that sometime.

@raeltheimperialaerosolkid
for h264+5.1dd use .m2ts and ps3 optical output to a compatible a/v receiver...
for h264+5.1dd/5.1dts use AVCHD usb stick and ps3 optical output to a compatible a/v receiver...
for h264+5.1aac use .mp4 and ps3 optical output to a compatible a/v receiver...

So this means that the decoding of 5.1 has to be made "outside" the PS3, right?

I can't wait for this!

Apparently Sony has commited to supporting Divx7, wheras the divx company has said that Microsoft aren't playing ball as far as supporting it...I own an Xbox 360 drat.

Stating the truth doesn't make me one. I have a PS3, but I only use it for games and blu-ray. I probably would have bought an XBox if they didn't die all the time and most games are multiplatform anyway. For my rips I use a WD TV, good value for the 80€ I paid for it.
