Greetings.
I need help creating AVCHD for playback on PS3 from .mp4 files recorded on a Sanyo HD2000 video cam. The formats is 1920x1080/60p MP4 AVC (H264) with AAC audio in 4GB chunks. Here are links to some samples:
http://ckworks.sakura.ne.jp/data/xacti_hd2000_dogsample20090207_1_mp4.zip

http://88.191.20.67/video/akiba/SANYO_HD2000_1920x1080_60fps.zip
Tried multiAVCHD and TSmuxeR without much success. There appeasrs to be a few problems : the .mp4 container, the 60p frame rate and the AAC audio.
Would very much appreciate any suggestions to get this done.

You can't put 60p to a Bluray Disc, let alone to AVCHD. Audio can be converted, but I doubt there is a solution for the video. 1920x1080@60i will work, not 60p.
I'm downloading the last sample to do some tests.

I think you can savely downsample the video to 720p60.
It doesn't contain enough detail to justify 1080i...

BLURAY STANDARD (RESTRICTION):
1920x1080 16x9 29.97 Interlaced
1920x1080 16x9 25 Interlaced
1920x1080 16x9 23.976* Progressive
1440x1080 16x9 29.97 Interlaced
1440x1080 16x9 25 Interlaced
1440x1080 16x9 23.976* Progressive
1280x720 16x9 59.94 Progressive
1280x720 16x9 50 Progressive
1280x720 16x9 23.976* Progressive
720x576 16x9 25 Interlaced
720x576 4x3 25 Interlaced
720x480 16x9 29.97 Interlaced
720x480 4x3 29.97 Interlaced
The combination 1280x720 16x9 59.94 Progressive (720 60p) has the highest frame rate for NTSC videos.
Reminder: 60i has the equivalent bit rate as 30p since 60i has 30 odd interlaced lines + 30 even interlaced lines scanning in 1sec while 30p has full-screen scan lines in 1sec. It is very confusing but the terminology reflects the underlining fact. The intuitive way of think 30i as an equivalent to 30p is WRONG...and this was what I thought. In fact 60i means 29.97 interlaced for NTSC system.

Greetings deank. Many thanks for testing the clips.
Apparently PS3 will play these clips without problem. So if AVCHD can accommodate them, PS3 may be able to handle the folder structure as well.
Best regards.

I added support for AAC and MP4 files in multiAVCHD just few minutes ago, but the problem is the video and tsmuxer doesn't like it at all. I'll see what more can be done.

First test was done with .m2ts created by tsmuxer without the aac track. The file strcuture created played in Nero8, and the files played in MPC.
Second test used .mp4 files (video and audio) as input. Both structure and files not playable.
It looks like 60p frame rate might be accepted after all.

AAC aduio format seems not to be compatible with Bluray standard (restriction), while PS3 is OK with AAC. Other standalone BD player may not support AAC as input. In fact, AAC-contained vidoe.mp4 is not played through Bluray disc by PS3, PS3 plays it through USB memory stick or harddisk.

What I meant with "I added support or AAC files in multiAVCHD" is that multiAVCHD will accept files with such audio codec and will convert it to AC3.
mariner

Eac3to does not like the nero8. What shall I do to enable AAC to AC3 conversion?
deank
28th March 2009, 14:41
You need to enable 'ffmpeg' option in multiavchd audio&sub tab and of course you need to have ffmpeg.exe... either from megui tools folder or any other if you have it. But still multiAVCHD won't handle properly your video.

As a matter of fact, most people fail to add proper vidio+audio formats as input because we know very little about the Bluray STANDARD which restricts the input domain, for example, HDDVD can accept 1980x1080 30p while Bluray restricts to 1980x1080 60i. PS3 outputs native 1920x1080 24p to 24p compatitable TV, when 24p TV is not available, it output the 24p video as 60p (most computer monitor accepts 60p). Because 24p is directly correspondent to film-making 1:1 conversion, while 24p-to-30p or 24p-to-60p needs smart redistribution of frame ratio (known as 2:3 pull down) and is deemed to be causing motion artefact, newer TV now can accept 24p and up-convert the 24p into x2 or x3 scan, ie 72p. This new standard of 72p TV is marketed purely for the videophiles. I don't know why Bluray does not accept 1920x1080 30p videos (while 1920x1080 60i is OK). Since I am not a vidoephile and can't see the big difference of a 24p-to-60p motion artefact, I personally speculate it as a conspiracy for the marketing of 72p TV. Does anyone notice the 1080i output has any big impact to the eyes when most TV accepts the 1080i and up-converted it to 1080p at display? The most important effect of interlaced vs progressive on display is the way how the original picture was captured. For film-making, a frame is exposed at 1/24sec while for HD camcorder, a frame is captured by scanning the CCD or CMOS from top to bottom. Motion artefact is unavoidable when the object moves faster than the capture rate of 1/30sec (progressive scan), or 1/60 half-scan in interlaced mode. CANON HD Camcorder has a way to do the "30p" capture and stores and display at 60i. Therefore HD camcorders never produce the same look as film with respect to the way how a single frame is captured.

30p and 60i are the same when it comes to raw-data transmission and the underlying motion is only 30fps.
so I don't see any issue with 1080i60 on bluray.

The difference lies on very fast motion. Flickering occurs for interlaced display(old TV). All modern TV accepts 1080i as input but display them as 1080p output and mostly up converts to 60p from 30p.

Much appreciate your help, Dean. Some encouraging test results:
1. Converted the AAC track into AC3 and remuxed into .m2ts using tsMuxeR.
2. multiAVCHD created AVCHD without complain.
3. Nero 8 plays the AVCHD folder at 60p.
So creating a AVCHD folder with 1920x1080/60p with AC3 is not an issue. If multiAVCHD can improve its handling of AAC and .mp4, a one click solution from AAC/mp4 to AVCHD is not impossible.
Many thanks for your great work, Dean.

I used MP4Box to demux, eac3to to convert .aac track to .ac3, tsMuxer to remux the .ac3 and .h264 tracks into m2ts which is then used as input to multiAVCHD.
It appears tsMuxeR does not like .mp4 as well.

to use mp4 or mkv or mov files with aac audio you need to ENABLE

Yes. Both ffmpeg and Use eac3to are enabled. I don't understand but multiAVCHD will terminate if eac3to is not enabled.

I'm trying with this sample: SANY0009.MP4
And I can't make tsmuxer accept the pure h264 stream demuxed by mplayer. I'll test again.
I found a bug with the eac3to/ffmpeg checkboxes as you pointed out. It is fixed now.
It seems that mplayer doesn't output correct h264 from mp4 but mkvextract does extract a correct one from mkv...

Tried without success using the add external audio track function, with .aac audio track and a .m2ts file with no audio. multiAVCHD does not seem to accept .aac audio track at the moment, but if this can be fixed, then it would be quite simple to created a folder with aac audio for testing.

I succeeded in one step :) with the sample file and it plays perfect :) I'll post later after I update (again) multiAVCHD :)

According to the Technical Specification (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc) of Bluray, 1920x1080 60p is a non-standard video. My PS3 plays 1920x1080 non-standard frame rates at 30p and 60p but my monitor detected the PS3 output as 1080i@60Hz, while the 24p standard video is output as 1080p@60Hz. I think we need some more information from people not using PS3 as standalone BD-player for these non-standard AVCHD videos.
I tested with SANY0009.MP4 and fail to get any sound even with SANY0009.MKV when 2 other video.MP4 downloaded from PS3 Network work fine after remuxed to video.MKV.

Thank you for making the AAC.mp4 input a 1-step procedure. However, why don't you leave the newly made AAC.mkv (meta-data) undeleted so that people can re-use it next time and save some time. I would delete the old AAC.mp4 or save it to other place (for example USB memory stick for playing in PS3) and keep the AAC.mkv.
Thank you.

The SANY0009.MP4 as well as some apple.mov videos has some strange audio muxed into them. Mere remuxing them into a new .MKV might not be working at all. I needed to import the SANY0009.MP4 into vegas to rebuild the ac3 and remux it back. Some other apple.mov I downloaded from the CANON (official samples) also have the same problem and I need to completely rebuild the apple.mov into bluray-compliant video before they can be processed by multiAVCHD. I personally speculate that 1920x1080 60p source made into multiAVCHD might not be played by most BD-players except for the special one such as PS3 because of the non-compliance to the bluray standard. If people want to share their works, there is always a risk that some BD players show black screen.

Greetings Dean.
First test with 1920x1080/60P AVCHD was not encouraging. Could not duplicate your successful result.
On the PS3, playback from both the DVD-R and USB thumb drive stuttered badly, with the X-series TV showing 1080i. Testing a second DVD-R where the Level was left at 4.2 (the first was forced to 4.1), the TV showed 720p, again stuttering badly.
Did not test .mp4 file playback as PS3 failed to recognized the clip on the USB drive.
On the 550, the TV showed 1080P but image was garbled. The USB drive was not recognized.
So how did you get this to work?

Thanks for the reply Dean.
1. Theses clips are encoded at L4.2. How is playback affected if Force AVC 4.1 is selected or not?
2. I was surprised the .mp4 files on USB drive did not show up when plugged into the PS3. Must they reside at the drive's root level and adhere to 8.3 naming convention?
3. Can the USB drive hold multiple AVCHD folder with different names? Any restrictions on the names used?
4. Any special setting needed on your PS3? Firmware version?
Sorry I have to direct these questions at you. The Sony staff were of not much help.
Just to recap, you had smooth playback on PS3 from AVCHD DVD-R and both .MP4 files and AVCHD folder from USB drive, but you were not able to identify if played at i or p.

I never tried the MP4 directly, but after I process it with multiAVCHD to get AVCHD structure.
To see the .mp4 file in your usb you need to put it in \VIDEO\ folder.
You use \VIDEO for video files, \MUSIC for audio files, \PICTURE for pictures, \AVCHD for AVCHD content, \PS3 for game backups (\PS3\BACKUP) and system updates (\PS3\UPDATE\). Of course you can always use "TRIANGLE" / DISPLAY ALL and browse all folders/files on your USB/Data CD/DVD.
You can have as many AVCHD folders as you like within the root of your USB drive, for example:
AVCHD_1
AVCHD_test
newAVCHDfolder
justfoldername
but for these folders to be recognized you need to choose ONE and name it exactly AVCHD. You can use AVCHD Manager to rename/make default a selected folder.
My PS3 is 60GB PAL version dated March 2007 FW 2.60.
Forcing level usually doesn't do much, but I had some 5.1 videos that won't play on my PS3, but with a simple change to 4.1 they played.
I had a smooth playback both from DVD-RW and USB flash drive. Both showed 1920x1080p (at least the TV shows 1080p).

I notice your sample does not include any menu.
I used the ntsc option for generating the custom menu. The .m2ts file created has a frame rate of 29.97, which I take it to mean 59.94i. Could this be the cause of PS3 playing back the disc in 60i?

Menu creation should not affect titles/movies at all.
Yes, NTSC menu is created in 29.970 and menu is in 1080i, but it has nothing to do with the playback of the sample.

I did few tests today with 2 of your samples (the dog and sanyo).
1st) I'll need to check my eyes I guess. PS3 plays both samples in 1080i NOT 1080p.
2nd) I have 4 versions of ffmpeg and ONLY ONE of them will convert AAC to AC3 properly. All other encode it but PS3 says "no audio".
Here is a link to the version that works for me. (http://rapidshare.com/files/216524505/ffmpeg.rar) (2MB)

I did tests with Force level 4.1 and without - didn't make difference. I guess you'll have to settle with 1080i - and I don't think that I has any impact on the visual perception of your video - in fact it may look much better sometimes if there is more motion in your content.

Thanks for testing. Did PS3 also play the .mp4 files at 1080i?
deank
2nd April 2009, 15:10
I'll have to test that, but if I play the MTS file directly from XMB (display all/avchd/bdmv/stream/00000.mts) it plays in 1080p with AC3 audio.
YES - the original MP4 file plays fine from my USB flash in 1080p, but TIME-display won't show progress, only 00:00:00 -------- 00:00:29 and audio is out of sync.

Let's hope it can handle .mp4 with AAC at 60p without stutter.

Thanks for the new samples , Dean.
Here is the result of testing done on the PS3, using folders created by version 496:
1. AVCHD (both DVD-R and USB HDD)
Video: Played at 1080i with stutter.
Audio: Played fine.
2. .mp4 file with AAC audio
Video: Display showed 1080P. Quite smooth but in slow motion.
Audio: Played fine, so it's racing ahead of video.
3. .m2ts file with AC3 audio
Video: Same as (2).
Audio: With breakup, like trying to keep in sync with video.
Quite a disappointing result. Even file playback did not work.
Thanks and best regards.

Please use latest build (507+). I have them played fine (I think but some stuttering).
Still... bitrate of your 1080@60p may be too high - it was expected. No one said that PS3/SAP will support such format - we were just trying.
Also - file playback is much more limited than BD/AVCHD.

Here are results of testing done on SAP. Nothing worked, as expected.
1. Sony 550: Video was distorted, but audio was fine.
2. Panasonic 30: Stopped at menu.
3. LG 300: Disc rejected. Some reported removing Certificate and a few other folders would fix the problem.
4. LG 370, Samsung 1500 and Pioneer: Some stutter in video playback, and perhaps a little slower than 60P. Breakup in audio playback.
Hope some may find this info useful.

Did you use Blu-Ray disc for your tests? Because if not - Sony could probably do better job than reading from DVD.
I guess 1080p@60fps should be only used for pre/post production and then converted to a consumer standard, but not distributed as is.

24p to 60p is OK, not 60p to 24p. It seems all lower frame rates are compatible with doubling or tripling but not the reverse way. The main reason lies on the original frame which is captured with HD camcorder. The film frame is captured with "global shutter" while HD camcorder captures with "rolling shutter". A frame captured with rolling shutter, should it be 60p or 120p, all suffered from the "rolling shutter" artifact. A 30p HD camcorder movie may be upconverted to 60p without obvious problem but not vice versa. 1920x1080 60p is way beyond the Bluray specification. It is only good for post-processing with "slow motion" effect and may not be OK for down-conversion to 30p or 60i video. Modern technology is way up and beyond the not-so-old past tense of Bluray. In fact, all old 24p film are presented in the movie theatre with double frame or triple frame post-processing. The projector actually does it in 48 frame/sec or 72 frame/sec and the frame rate is not in "progressive" or "interlaced" mode of the TV system. We go to the cinema, watching movie with 48 fps "global shutter" production.

Greetings Dean.
I don't have a BD writer set up yet.
The nominal bit rate of Sanyo clip is 24mbps, with a maximum of 29mpbs. This is lower than the 35.4mbps bit rate of your 23.976 Hz VC1 sample. Did it play well from a DVD-R?
By the way, MPC's internal splitter could not detect the video stream. Would you know why?
Thanks and best regards.

Thanks for testing. On the PS3, I assume. Would like to know which of the following works/ or does not work:
1. Does the .mp4 file play fine with no audio sync/delay issue in 60P?
2. .m2ts ?
3. AVCHD/BD (ie. burned to BD)?
4. AVCHD/DVD (ie. burned to DVD)?
5. AVCHD/USB HDD?

1) Burned to DVD+RW in AVCHD mode - plays perfectly (in 1080i)
2) Copied to USB drive:
* MP4 file has audio totally out of sync
* M2TS file - audio totally out of sync + stuttering (audio)
* AVCHD mode - play perfectly
There is not much movement in this video (except the hand of the girl and the strange SNOW, snowing in summer time :) ) but in AVCHD mode I can't see any video breaks/stuttering.

No, eac3to will be used when needed. As in this case it fails and ffmpeg is used - hence the success.

Playstation3 plays it. There is no indication at what framerate, but if it was dropping some frames I would've noticed it.
Of course - the test samples don't have a lot of motion, so I can't be sure how it will handle dynamic scenes.
I know that a bitrate peaks of 50-60Mbps (displayed in AVCHD mode, while playing 1080p with PS3) are handled 100%.

So if I generated a 1080p60 MP4 with AC3 audio that plays from the XMB, it should be able to be turned into an AVCHD disc?
I'll have to look at the structure of the files as I found that 60fps required a lot of AVC features to disabled, including CABAC, which isn't good. I also needed to encode with MainConcept (again not good) as PS3 relies on decoding multiple slices in parallel which x264 doesn't support.
I'm downloading one of the sample AVCHD files now and can easily check it's running at 60fps.

I just burned that using ImgBurn and it comes up as a Data Disc on my PS3. I got imgburn to correct it when I fed it the files and it doesn't seem to have worked. How do you burn this?
I can play the files directly from the STREAM folder though and they look great.
deank
28th June 2009, 20:55
Sorry.. it was a compilation to test on a Blu-ray disc (BD-RE).
Still.. files are original 1920x1080p @ 60fps but XMB playback is different than Blu-ray or AVCHD.
If you have multiAVCHD you can simply transform it to AVCHD by dragging the folder and processing it as [AVCHD for DVD].
If you don't have it, use "goBD (http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/goBD-tool.exe)" tool.. it will only patch the index file, so you can re-burn it.
(and please - do not 'let' imgburn to 'correct' or add/remove anything)
And instead of burning you can always use USB stick or MS card or SDHC card for Playstation3.

Hmmm I've exported a PS3 AVCHD structure and copied it to a USB flash drive, but nothing's happening. Does it need to be the *only* thing on the drive. I made a folder called "old" and stuck all the other content I had on the drive in there.

If you patched your index.bdmv and renamed all files to 8.3 (you can do it with AVCHD Manger if you want) and created:
X:\AVCHD\
X:\AVCHD\BDMV <-- here is the folder from the disc-archive
...
8.3 filenames require
index.bdmv -> INDEX.BDM
MovieObject.bdmv -> MOVIEOBJ.BDM
*.clpi -> *.CPI
*.mpls -> *.MPL
*.m2ts -> *.MTS

I see the problem. The files need to be in a folder called AVCHD, so I've put them there. I've run it through AVCHD Manager any way and AVCHD does indeed appear on the PS3 now, but attempting to access it just causes the machine to lock up. I will try to create a short sample rather than the 0.6GB version I have now.

Here is a seven second sample. It is encoded to AVCHD specs, but with CABAC turned off and a couple of other minor tweaks. Navigate to the STREAM folder and it plays beautifully from the XMB, but try to run it as an AVCHD and it freezes the PS3 and you need to turn it off to get it working again!

Copied your AVCHD folder to USB stick and had no problems playing it.
My PS3 is 60GB PAL (plays everything). From the screenshot you can see it is in AVCHD player mode, not the XMB one.

edit: I noticed that your file is marked as PAL, your compilation is marked as NTSC. Is your PS3 PAL?

EDIT: Problem was with my USB stick. Got it working with a 1GB file. Quality is awesome! The decoder appears to run the file much much smoother than the XMB can.

Great :) Yes, AVCHD mode has a lot of advantages.

Hi Dean,
Can you please take a look at the following thread:
http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showthread.php?tid=25403&page=1
It seems like the same 'problem' you're dealing with in this thread (1080p with 60fps) same camera aswell SANYO HD2000.
I seem to manage to convert the .MP4 1080p 60fps to MKV and TS, BUT audio is out of sync. Is that the same with you're tool.
Maybe you can try my samples from : http://www.lirodesigns.com/sanyo
and check if you have audio sync problems ?
Thanks in advance !

The first file gets processed, but there is a problem demuxing the audio.
The second is processed ok by multiAVCHD and plays fine.
