Hi there, i've got a NTSC DVD (640x480pixel) and want to reencode it to avi. Guide doom9 says i should use 4:3 DAR. Its a 2,35:1 Movie. Of course, the SVCD Version is letterboxed and i want to cut the black bars of and conserve the width of 640pixel. So, what#s the horizontal res???

Thanks for your help,

how about reading some guides and following them just step by step? all you want to know is actually in there (yes.. that includes how you have to crop this particular source to get rid of the black bars). and the dvd2avi page states to just write down the dar from dvd2avi.. you're going to use it at a later step

Alright, thats a nice answer. Maybe i did get you wrong, but your answer sounds like: "You dumbnut, can't you just read the guides and shut up!"
I committ, i haven't stated my problem clear enough. So here's the deal:

SVCDs are encoded as 480x480 (NTSC) or 480x576 (PAL) and being stretched at playback time to 640x480 (NTSC) or 768. For for NTSC discs the horizontal resolution must not exceed 640 and for PAL it must not exceed 768 (and should not exceed 640 either for compatibility reasons).

Maybe i don't understand enough english, but imo the guide says that you should use the res of 640x480. But you have to choose NTSC, or the aspect ratio will be wrong!

I solved the problem by myself, but i would appreciate your comments
