I've been trying to encode some PAL interlaced DVDs without success. I could encode progressive PAL and it comes out good but with interlaced, big ugly blocks will appear during some motion scenes.
I've tried many methods listed but still those ugly blocks still appears. The encodes are usually done with an average of about 2200bitrate.
If anyone can help or knows anywhere that has a good guide on this, please help me out, thanks.

Are you using CBR? Which methods have you tried? Some more info would help.

i've tried automatic VBR , 2pass and CBR on tmpgenc. Also tried 3-5 pass vbr on CCE.
Preview on DVD2AVI shows an interlaced source but the weird thing is that when i tried to use tmpgenc to check which field order, both seems to run the same, not sure to classify it to be jerky or smooth but i can't detect any difference between the 2 field order.
I've tried both to deinterlace it and leave it alone but both comes out the same with those big ugly blocks on some scenes.
Tried soften block noise in tmpgenc too but it didn't make a difference.
anyone has any idea?

Is it possible it could just be a bad rip?
I had similar problems when a ripped a DVD before, after a re-rip it was fine.

Sounds like you are have the same problem that I and another member Waldoc were having, never actually got to the bottom of this problem, but here is the link to the lengthy thread.

I have to de-interlace my DV AVI's to get any reasonable output.
Good Luck
