View Full Version : Any "visual" editors for MKV/x264 ?

It's been a long time since doing any editing/encoding myself (V'Dub/AVISynth) but have of late found the need to edit some MKV files. After researching many of the current MKV editors none seem to provide the simplified convenience of being able to "visually" choose mark-in/out points (i.e. V'Dub, VideoReDo, MPEG Wizard, etc.).
I'm sure I've overlooked a candidate so any insight is appreciated.

Perfectamundo! Avidemux looks to be exactly what I was hoping for. After installation the first file loaded flawlessly and editing seems to be quite straight forward and very easy due to the ability to visually see the expected.
Thank you very much for the solid advice! :)

Keep in mind that Avidemux support of H.264 streams with B-frames is not at a very stable point yet. When you get the prompt about which mode to choose, choose the one with frame accuracy (the one that may crash) and only cut on keyframes to avoid leaving some B-frames without a keyframe to reference. I've had really no problems with this aside from a few crashes with much older SVN builds of Avidemux, but if you're just cutting and appending segments you may want to pick out the cut points in Avidemux and use MKVMerge(GUI) to do the actual cutting and appending. As a nice bonus, MKVMerge automatically seeks to the nearest keyframe so you can pick timecodes that suit your tolerance for things that are a pain in the butt: either just put in hours/minutes/seconds for a very accurate cut or if you're enough of a masochist to hunt for individual keyframes (shown in the lower part of the Avidemux window) you can enter nanoseconds up to nine decimal places. Note that for practical purposes, with a frame rate of 25 fps you're only looking at up to two useful figures right of the decimal point.
